A hormone imbalance can really shake up your world and not in a good way. But we tend to cry about them and move on without really doing anything to address the problem. Hormones are not mysterious, magical forces beyond our control. You can fix them and, as it turns out, the cause might be in your kitchen. Yes, your kitchen might actually be the villain in this hormonal horror story. Let’s do a quick kitchen tour and find out what could be secretly causing your hormonal imbalance.

1. Plastic containers

hormonal imbalance causes

You know those convenient plastic containers we use for leftovers? Many contain Bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical known to mimic oestrogen in the body. This mimicry can lead to hormonal disruptions, potentially affecting fertility and increasing the risk of certain cancers. Studies have shown that BPA can leach into food, especially when containers are heated or scratched. Use glass or stainless steel containers instead. They’re not only safer but also more durable and environment-friendly.

2. Non-stick cookware

Non-stick pans are a staple in many kitchens due to their ease of use. However, when these pans get scratched or overheated, they can release per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), often referred to as “forever chemicals.” PFAS have been linked to thyroid disorders and other hormonal imbalances. Consider using cast iron or stainless steel cookware. They might require a bit more maintenance, but they don’t carry the same risks.

3. Refined cooking oils

Refined vegetable oils, such as canola or sunflower oil, undergo extensive processing, which can strip them of beneficial nutrients and introduce harmful compounds. These oils can promote inflammation in the body, potentially leading to hormonal imbalances. Embrace cold-pressed oils like olive or coconut oil. They retain more of their natural nutrients and are less likely to disrupt your hormonal balance.

4. Tea bags

A comforting cup of tea is a daily ritual for many. However, some tea bags, especially those made from plastic or sealed with plastic-based adhesives, can release microplastics when steeped in hot water. These microplastics have been found in human tissues and are suspected to interfere with hormonal functions. Switch to loose-leaf teas and use a stainless steel or ceramic infuser. It’s a simple change that can make a significant difference.

5. Canned foods

Many canned foods are lined with BPA-containing resins to prevent corrosion. As mentioned earlier, BPA can leak into the food, especially acidic items like tomatoes, leading to potential hormonal disruptions. Look for cans labeled “BPA-free” or choose fresh or frozen alternatives when possible.

6. Aluminium foil

Using aluminium foil to cook or store food, especially acidic dishes, can lead to aluminium in your food. Excessive aluminium intake has been linked to various health concerns, including potential hormonal effects. Use parchment paper for baking and opt for glass or stainless steel containers for storage.

7. Plastic wraps

Plastic wraps often contain phthalates, chemicals used to increase flexibility. These chemicals can migrate into food, particularly fatty items, and have been associated with hormonal disruptions. Consider using beeswax wraps or silicone covers. They’re reusable, eco-friendly, and safer for your health.

Your hormones are sensitive little superstars. They thrive in balance, not chaos. A few small changes can help you fight these hormonal imbalance causes.
