When the trailer was first released, Good Bad Girl looked promising. With a unique story and lead character, this was one series that we were looking forward to.
Samridhi Dewan is the lead protagonist in this series about a young lawyer who “loves lying”. The series starts with a young Maya Ahuja who gets into trouble for being too truthful. When her mother tells her not to shout the truth about her neighbours in front of them, Maya realises that lying will help her more than the truth. And she uses her skill of twisting facts to become a promising lawyer. But when her struggles at work keep piling up and she’s about to be fired for losing a client and shouting at a judge in court, Maya tells the biggest lie of them all–that she has cancer. When HR, or Humanity Resources, gets involved and promises perks that Maya never imagined, she is motivated to continue the lie despite a nemesis at work who will do anything to discredit her. Directed by Abhishek Sengupta, Good Bad Girl also stars Aradhya Aanjna, Sheeba Chadha, and Gul Panag.
Good actors let down by cliches
Good Bad Girl tries hard to be funny and shocking. The abusive language that has become one of the norms of Indian OTT content is rampant. Samridhi’s Maya does everything to be the cool girl, but somewhere in this character’s journey, she gets lost in her own cliches. She’s living alone in Mumbai so she’s having a lot of sex, which is great but not necessarily representative of the urban single girl life.
Samridhi Dewan is convincing and makes you want to root for her and also warn people away from her. But her character is written in a haphazard manner that doesn’t do justice to a talented actor. The maniacal look that Samridhi manages to bring to the character is rare for an actor, but when she’s given scenes like shouting expletives during a mammogram, it weakens a complex character like Maya.
Gul Panag, as senior lawyer Zaina Mistry and Maya’s boss, is a stereotypical tough leader who doesn’t shy away from a bit of nepotism. However, her over-simplified character is a letdown because we know Panag is capable of so much more than glaring at the camera.
One of the main actors that we were looking forward to in Good Bad Girl was Sheeba Chadha as Maya’s mother. Unfortunately, we don’t see enough of her in the series.
Good Bad Girl may not hold your attention for more than a few minutes at a time. But the story may entertain if you’re looking for nothing more than fluff this weekend. Good Bad Girl is streaming now on SonyLIV.
