Varun Dhawan and Samantha Ruth Prabhu’s series Citadel: Honey Bunny is streaming now on Amazon Prime Video. This is the prequel to Priyanka Chopra’s Citadel which came out in 2023. Since its trailer release, the new Citadel series has been creating buzz among fans, but does it live up to expectations? Read this Citadel: Honey Bunny review.
Engaging and fast-paced
Directed by Raj and DK, Citadel: Honey Bunny casts Kay Kay Menon and Saqib Saleem alongside Varun Dhawan and Samantha Ruth Prabhu. Spread over six episodes, the series is nuanced and fast-paced. It engages you quickly and then doesn’t let you go. There are many things that usually go wrong in the spy-action universe, but Raj and DK have done an amazing job keeping the series controlled and believable. No flying cars, no unbelievable punches.
Citadel: Honey Bunny follows the lives of Honey (Samantha) and Bunny (Varun). Honey is an aspiring actor and Bunny is a stuntman in ’90s Bollywood. They are good friends until the tables turn and the two come together for a local mission. Kay Kay Menon plays the role of Baba who shelters orphans including Bunny and KD, played by Saqib Saleem, and then trains them. But his intentions remain unclear for a while.
The series swings between 1992 and 2000. In 2000, a lot has changed, and Honey and Bunny have a daughter (Nadia), but the question is how do they choose what’s right and what’s wrong? The characters in the series are pretty grey. Heroes become villains and villains turn into heroes very quickly.
Citadel: Honey Bunny is part romance film and part action and both genres have been done right. Samantha and Varun’s onscreen chemistry is quite convincing. Not a single scene feels out of line with the story. There’s also a dash of family dynamics and good parenting in the series.
Power-packed performances by Varun Dhawan, Samantha Prabhu
Varun Dhawan has finally got a role that brings out the tough and emotional sides of him together. Saqib Saleem as KD is also convincing, bringing the right amount of anger and devotion to the series. Kay Kay Menon is persuasive and powerful in his character of Baba, who oscillates between being a hero and a villain.
The star of the cast is Kashvi Majumdar (Nadia), who is shown as a tough and intelligent kid.
Overall, Citadel: Honey Bunny is an engaging and well-crafted series. The cast, the direction, and the action sequences make it worth watching. The subtle Indian references and slight humour make the series all the more enjoyable.
Can you watch it with your family? There’s just one kissing scene in the movie and it ends quickly, so yes.
