Directed by Raaj Shaandilya, Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video follows the story of a stolen sex tape of a newly married couple, setting the stage for a neverending chase to retrieve it. Set in the late 90s’, the director caught one thing from the time and revolved an entire movie around it – the CD. The film stars Rajkummar Rao, Triptii Dimri and Vijay Raaz in the lead, who carry the script till the last minute. The khichdi needed more elements, so the supporting cast features Archana Puran Singh, Mallika Sherawat, Tiku Talsania, Saharsh Kumar Shukla, Ashwini Kalsekar and Rakesh Bedi, amongst others. Is this really a laughter riot or something else altogether? Read this review of Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video to find out.
A comedy of errors
The actual comedy comes when the characters unintentionally become clowns to induce humour in the story. Vicky (Rajkummar Rao), a mehendi artist, loves Vidya (Triptii Dimri), a doctor. Their love story comes to a halt when Vidya’s parents find a Punjabi guy for her. But since this is Bollywood, obviously, Vicky will get the heroine, Vidya. On their honeymoon, Vicky suggests a ‘tip’ to Vidya — record their sex tape so that it can reunite them if they ever fight.
The dreamy suhaagraat comes with massive chaos as the videotape gets robbed by a thief, among other belongings from the house. This wild robbery welcomes Vijay Raaz, who plays the cop in this comedy, proving India’s law is not a joke (comedy peaked here). Chanda, Vicky’s sister, aka Mallika Sherawat, becomes the cop’s ‘hot’ driving force to continue the frantic search for the thief. What’s more to the movie except weird flings and overstretched runtime?
Acting saved the day
The movie runs on an illogical comic plot when it suddenly drops a serious sex traffic issue that was prevalent in the late 90s’. As lengthy and absurd as the movie title sounds, Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video tries hard not to prove it true. The movie starts pretty well but drops flat on the face in the middle and then picks it off again. You might want to walk out of the theatre once the second half starts, but wait! The ending shuns comedy (finally) to add elements of mystery and horror, compelling you to stay for the last minute.
Has Rajkummar Rao purchased the copyright for Vicky as SRK did for Rahul, Salman Khan for Prem and so on? Well, glad he did because Vicky never disappoints. After a hilarious performance in Stree 2, he has delivered the humour well in Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video too. The outrage Triptii Dimri is getting because she chose commercial success over quality script should soon fade. She is decently pulling her acting skills together, leaving the audience with fewer regrets.
That’s all for the review of Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video. You can now watch it in theatres near you.
