No relationship is perfect. Every relationship has its ups and downs and that is how it should be. Sometimes, specific conflicts help strengthen the relationship. But that, in no way, means that there is no love. But sometimes, conflicts that seem small might be precursors to a bigger situation, especially if they have been going on for a long time. By ignoring such problems, you might be brushing off warning signs that your relationship is doomed. Keep your eyes out for these eight signs of a failing relationship.
1. Communication is minimal
Communication is the foundation of any relationship. So, if you notice your communication with your partner dwindling, know that there’s trouble in paradise. In the early stages of a relationship, even in a healthy relationship, partners enjoy hearing about each other. When your partner starts showing a lack of interest in what you have to say or keeps trying to avoid any form of communication, your relationship could be headed towards failure.
2. You don’t fight anymore
No relationship will be sunshine and rainbows all the time. Healthy arguments and fights are a part of any good relationship. When two people come together, there will inevitably be clashes. But if your partner is constantly avoiding fights or arguments, that’s not a good sign. A partner who avoids a fight just shows that they no longer care about the relationship or the other person anymore.
3. You fight too much
An occasional fight is fine. But trouble brews when you are constantly fighting. If you are throwing accusations and hurtful words at each other constantly, that’s a sign your relationship is failing. If you or your partner are starting an argument about the smallest things, giving each other the silent treatment, or knowingly hurling hurtful accusations, it’s time to ask yourself if this is a relationship you want to continue.
4. Everything has a negative reaction
Sharing your passion and interests with someone you love is quite common. Them listening to you with their full attention is also a part of a healthy relationship. But when you or your partner start getting irritable or impatient every time one of you shares something, take a step back and look at your relationship dynamics. If your partner is constantly rejecting you or dismissing everything you say or do or snapping at you for minute things, your relationship is on the verge of falling apart.
5. Your partner becomes secretive
Honesty is crucial in any relationship – romantic or otherwise. That is one of the hallmarks of a healthy relationship. The moment honesty flies out the window is when you know the relationship is on a downward spiral. All partners have little secrets from each other, small white lies so to speak. Those are probably something like hiding that you forgot to put the toilet seat down or broke their favourite vase. But if you start hiding the big, important stuff from your partner, it’s time for an intervention. Being honest in a relationship does not impinge on your privacy. But if you hide things from your partner that could potentially affect a choice they make, that’s a warning sign for your relationship.
6. You start entertaining thoughts of being alone
People in love generally enjoy spending time with each other. You are always looking forward to meeting your partner and spending time with them. But when you start fantasising about being alone all the time or start imagining a life without your partner, that’s troublesome. If you constantly find yourself making excuses to avoid seeing your partner, that’s a sign of a failing relationship.
7. There’s no affection anymore
Affection is an integral part of romantic relationships. Lack of affection can be a sign of lack of love and interest. While the red-hot passion you had when you first started dating may fizzle in a few years, if you lose the affection, that signals trouble. Intimacy and physical touch are important for any relationship. If every touch of your partner irritates you and the thought of being physical with them repels you, it’s time to cut your losses.
8. You lack trust in each other
We all know how important trust is in a relationship. To make any relationship work, there has to be inherent trust between the partners. That’s what makes the relationship flourish. But, if you start looking at every move your partner makes with suspicion, that’s a sign your relationship is in trouble.
If you notice any of these signs in your relationship, it might be time to take a closer look and re-evaluate your life with your partner.
