Don’t we all have that one friend who’s always available for birthday parties, laid-back lunches, and vacation photo dumps but somehow vanishes the minute things look rough? The moment you are spiralling or going through a breakup, they are suddenly ‘too busy’. They are chronically online but conveniently forget to check your texts for days on end. If all of this sounds even slightly familiar, congratulations, you’re probably dealing with a fair-weather friend. It’s time to face adulthood’s rude awakening. People you call “friends” might not be prepared to be one. So, here are the signs of fair-weather friends and how to let go of them and allow yourself to heal.

What is a fair-weather friend?

A fair-weather friend is someone who loves the easy parts of a relationship but goes MIA as soon as things become emotionally demanding. They are there for the social events, the exciting phases, and the wins. But as soon as the relationship asks them for patience, empathy, or genuine support, watch them return calls weeks later. While this doesn’t make them a bad person because not everyone is great at emotional confrontation, it does make you question your relationship with them.

Some people can’t show up in meaningful ways or get uncomfortable in stressful environments. But the reality of close friendships is that they aren’t built on the fun, exciting, high moments. They are built on the awkward conversations, showing up during unexpected crises, and randomly checking in on the other person. And if someone thrives when things are great and disappears the minute the switch flips, you deserve better. You deserve someone who stays through the storm, not someone who shows up only when it’s sunny.

Signs you’re dealing with a fair-weather friend

You might have seen certain signs but could have dismissed them, thinking it’s just a one-time thing. But those delayed responses, going by their own convenience, and getting pissed off when confronted aren’t mere coincidences. Here are the signs of a fair-weather friend you should stop turning a blind eye to.

They’re always around for celebrations, never for the crisis

Your friend could be your biggest cheerleader and hype person in good times. They’ll usually be the first ones to post a congratulatory story, book a table for dinner, and even text you with juicy gossip. Count them in to plan a detailed itinerary for your birthday trip, but the minute you hit a low, they become suspiciously unavailable. You could have lost a job, broken up, or had a terrible day and want them to comfort you. But they are suddenly too busy to respond or get back. That’s a sign, not a coincidence, love.

They conveniently remember you when they need something

Whether it is the hottest restaurant recommendation, career advice, emotional validation, or someone to talk to to kill time, they know what they are doing. They know when to reach out, and the conversation always feels warm and inviting till their purpose is served. But if you flip the roles, do you receive the same energy in return? Or do your calls go unanswered and texts sit unread? Healthy friendships don’t feel like emotional withdrawals, and if this is the case, it’s time to pull the plug.

They cheer for your wins until it starts making them uncomfortable

You know you’ve faced this situation but never admitted it. They are always rooting for you as long as they are in a good spot too. But as your wins get bigger and your confidence soars high, the compliments suddenly turn into backhanded jokes. Their enthusiasm for your goals fades, and somehow, there is always tension when something good happens for you. And if you have to downplay your excitement or wins just so they don’t feel bad or jealous, you know what’s happening.

Every conversation suddenly becomes about them

It’s good to play each other’s therapist and open up about what’s bothering you. Sometimes, you need space to vent and get things off your chest without the conversation circling back to your friend. And before you know it, you’re the one comforting them instead. Eventually, every time you open your mouth, you know how it’s going to end, and that’s exhausting. You stop sharing because you know you’ll either be dismissed or cut off midway. So, if your friendship has been feeling like a one-way street, stop ignoring the signs.

The friendship makes you wonder if you’re asking too much

The sneakiest and the most appalling thing about fair-weather friendships is how easily they make you doubt yourself. You start wondering if you’re clingy, overly sensitive, or expect too much from them. But the truth is, they are just a bad friend, and you keep putting up with their shit because you value them too much. Wanting emotional support, empathy, and a safe space from a friend isn’t asking for too much. So, if someone can’t even do the bare minimum, they don’t deserve your time and energy anymore.

How to let go and move on from fair-weather friends

It is not easy to face the mirror and let go of friendships that have lasted years. But history does not automatically mean loyalty. Learning to accept people for who they are instead of hoping they’ll change for the better is the biggest relationship lesson you’ll ever learn. Stop carrying friendships single-handedly and give people the same treatment you get. No going overboard for anyone who doesn’t make the same effort. Instead, spend your time and energy on people who make you feel emotionally safe instead of emotionally exhausted.

It is natural to outgrow people, and not every friendship is meant to last forever. So, it is better to pull the plug when things go south instead of waiting for them to die a slow, painful, nasty death. Start making space for people who show up for you without invitation rather than saving the seat for people who weren’t meant to weather the storm with you.
