A difference of opinion can now turn into a death sentence. The case of Kanchan Kumari, aka Kamal Kaur Bhabhi, proves that outrage travels faster than justice.
As reported by India Today, Kanchan Kumari was allegedly murdered by Jaspreet Manro, Nimratjeet Singh and Amritpal Singh Mehron. While the first two accused have been arrested, Amritpal is currently on the run. They allegedly killed Kanchan because they found her social media content obscene. Mehron reportedly called Kanchan to Bathinda for a promotional event and murdered her with the other accused as an act of ‘moral policing’. This case highlights how people, especially women, are often targeted for simply living in ways others disapprove of.

Crimes against women: A disturbing pattern of violence

Kamal Kumar Bhabhi’s case isn’t an exception; it’s an alarmingly common story among women in India. Recently, an 18-year-old Delhi University (DU) girl was stabbed and strangled by her classmate Arshkrit Singh because he was jealous. He didn’t like her talking to other boys, and so, he killed her. Such cases reflect men’s obsessive need to control women. Or simply kill them when the latter don’t obey. In Kamal Kaur’s instance, she refused to delete her content from Instagram.
The National Crime Records Bureau 2022 report registered 4,45,256 cases of crimes against women. The year saw a rise of 3.96 per cent from 2021. Additionally, 30,965 cases of rape were recorded. These numbers and cases like Kamal Kaur Bhabhi have only increased the fear among women. Many online have shared their worries over the same.

It’s concerning how visibility can turn into a death sentence for people, especially women. When will men be held accountable for their misplaced sense of ownership of women? Is murder justified under the guise of morals?
