Did you know a mirror can impact your life significantly? According to Vastu Shastra, an ancient Indian architectural design system, the direction in which a mirror is placed affects sleep quality, health, and financial gains. So, the next time you take a mirror selfie, check the direction of the mirror first.
We asked Mumbai-based Vastu consultant Isha Sinhal to recommend the right placements for mirrors and reflective surfaces. Here’s what she suggests.

What kind of energy do mirrors attract?

According to Isha, “Mirrors work on the principle of energy reflection and multiplication.” When placed in a particular direction, mirrors can “double the positive energy or multiply negative vibrations.” Reflective surfaces can also “create energy circulation by rebounding light and chi around rooms”. But the mirrors must be placed in the right direction to benefit you.
Ideal directions to place a mirror
Your health and wellness are heavily dependent on your daily lifestyle. But Vastu attributes some part of your wellbeing to the strategic placement of mirrors in your home and workspaces. Here’s how the wrong direction of mirrors affects your life, per Vastu Shastra.
- In the South: Vastu expert Isha Sinhal says, “When mirrors are placed on the Southern wall, they tend to affect financial stability. They might also impact your reputation among your people.”
- Reflecting the bed while sleeping: The Vastu consultant suggests avoiding such directions as they disrupt sleep. “This direction might also lead to problems in your relationships,” said Isha.
- Main entrance door: “Place mirrors on the main entrance door when the entrance is located in the North, Northeast, or East zones. Avoid placing mirrors on entrances that are aligned with the South, Southeast, or Southwest. It disrupts the incoming energy flow,” Isha Sinhal recommends.
- Kitchen stove: Mirrors facing the kitchen stove “multiply the fire element, leading to more conflicts,” she said.
Best area-specific directions to follow for mirror placement

Here are expert-suggested ideal directions to follow while placing mirrors in these areas.
- Bedroom: “Mirrors on the Northern or Eastern walls bring wealth and vibrancy. Avoid placing mirrors on the ceiling as overhead reflections can cause anxiety and restlessness,” Isha said.
- Hallways and passageways: According to Isha, “placing mirrors on northern or eastern walls in hallways can help circulate light and energy.”
- Dressing area: “Mirrors placed in the East align you with the sun’s energy, bringing optimism and clarity. North-facing mirrors also attract prosperity, especially when they are well-lit and clean.”
- Wardrobe shutters: The Vastu consultant suggests placing mirrors on the wardrobe shutters, provided they don’t reflect the bed or clutter zones, in the East or North.
- Bathrooms: “Place mirrors on the Northern or Eastern bathroom walls to boost positivity. Avoid placing them opposite the toilet to prevent negative vibes. Also, keep the bathroom doors closed.”
Difference between regular mirrors and glass

Apart from mirrors, reflective surfaces like glass, glossy tiles, and water also affect your life and health. Follow these expert-approved directions and ways to place different reflective materials.
- Glass surfaces: Isha suggests placing “materials like large windows, glass doors, and partitions in the East or North.” She also recommends using clear glass over tinted glass as “it amplifies energy into whatever it reflects.”
- Glossy tiles: “While glossy tiles reflect light, they are less intense than mirrors,” said Isha. She also suggests using light-coloured glossy tiles instead of black ones, especially in bedrooms, to brighten the space.
- Water: According to Isha, “Vastu Shastra considers water a natural, reflective surface with calming energy.” She recommends placing flowing water, like fountain-related décor items, over still water, in the North or Northeast direction.
How to use a mirror to attract wealth
Vastu Shastra emphasises the use of mirrors for monetary gains. According to Isha, “Placing a mirror facing a wealth-related symbol enhances prosperity.” She suggests keeping mirrors reflecting cash boxes or jewellery cabinets to double your financial luck. “A mirror that reflects the dining table enhances familial bonds, leading to abundance. Mirrors reflecting an organised workspace boost growth and financial opportunities,” said Isha. Using broken or cracked mirrors is not a good idea as they multiply negative energy. “Mirrors reflecting clutter increase chaos,” Isha added.
Vastu-approved mirrors for prosperity

Aesthetic mirrors are trendy, but Vastu says size and shape matter too. According to Isha, “Rounded, rectangular or square-shaped mirrors work best, ensuring harmony and stability. Mirrors in irregular shapes disrupt energy flow.” In terms of size, Isha recommends using medium-sized mirrors. “You must avoid oversized mirrors in the bedroom. And small mirrors have a limited energy impact,” she said.
Isha suggests using wooden-framed mirrors to ensure warmth in your spaces. “You can use metal frames, but they must match your room’s metal element needs. Avoid plastic frames as they are considered inauspicious in Vastu.”
But what if your mirror is not in the right direction or the Vastu-recommended size?
How to fix mirror Vastu doshas
According to Isha, “Covering the wrongly placed mirror with a cloth when not in use can fix its Vastu dosha…Place green plants between the mirror and the bed. Keeping small plants near the mirrors in the North or East enhances energy flow. Using decorative screens to redirect the mirror’s reflection is a good way to fix any direction issues,” she said. Isha suggests keeping your mirrors clean and polished to rectify flaws.
