When I think of Dubai, I always think of beautiful buildings, iconic deserts, the vast culture, and more. But lately, these scenic locations have been replaced by something else. Yep, it is a chocolate bar! All thanks to social media, this chocolate has recently broken the internet. People are going gaga over its unique flavours and textures, and everyone wants a bite of this gooey goodness. In fact, current news by The National reveals that a woman was confiscated at a German airport for carrying 90 kg of the famous Dubai Kunafa chocolate. Can you believe that? Hell, yes. But what’s so special about this sweet treat? The original candy bar is called Can’t Get Knafeh of It and is the creation of a Dubai-based Fix Dessert Chocolatier, where Fix stands for “Freakin’ Incredible Xperience.”

Knafeh or Kunafa is a traditional Arab ingredient made by shredding phyllo dough into fine, hairlike strands. When mixed with the gooey pistachio cream, it makes the dessert irresistible and different from your average chocolate bar. So, naturally, the craze for this chocolate is unmatched, and I really wanted to get my hands on it. But since I don’t know anyone living in Dubai, nor can I go there, I had to do my homework. So, if you’re facing the same dilemma, check out this recipe to gorge on that Dubai chocolate from the comfort of your home.

Total Time: 45-60 minutes

Ingredients:

2 cups kunafa

1 tbsp butter

2 medium bars brown, milk chocolate

1 cup pistachio paste

Green and yellow food colouring

1/2 cup tahini

A chocolate bar mould

1 small bar, white chocolate

AAE Pro tips:

  1. Don’t mistake kunafa for long, thin vermicelli. You can easily get kunafa from grocery stores online and offline.
  2. Make sure that kunafa is crunchy enough before mixing it with pistachio paste and tahini

Method:

Start by cutting the kunafa into small pieces. Then keep a saucepan on a medium flame and add butter to it. Once the butter completely melts, add the kunafa to it and mix until it turns golden brown. Next, add the pistachio paste and tahini to the pan and mix them well without breaking the kunafa.

Take a large saucepan, add a glass of water to it, and boil it on a medium flame. In a glass bowl, break the brown chocolate bars into small pieces. Then keep the bowl above the saucepan and stir the chocolate until melted fully. Once done, remove the brown chocolate from the stove and keep it aside. Meanwhile, keep another glass bowl in the saucepan, add white chocolate to it, and stir until it melts completely.

Assembling the chocolate

Now, divide the melted white chocolate into two small bowls. Add three drops of green food colouring to the first bowl and yellow colouring to the other. Take two knives, dip them into the green and yellow chocolate bowls separately, and splash the chocolate inside the mould. Now, pour a layer of the melted brown chocolate using a spoon on top, halfway through, and freeze it for about 10-15 minutes.

Once the first layer is set, add the pistachio kunafa paste over it. Top the mixture with some more brown chocolate and spread it nicely. Now, let it freeze for another 15-20 minutes. Once you think the chocolate is set, take it out of the mould slowly and enjoy your version of the famous Dubai chocolate.

Try and share this easy-to-make Dubai chocolate recipe with your loved ones to relish the dessert at home.
