Have you been facing financial troubles or health issues lately? It might have something to do with your shoes. Sounds scary, right? But Vastu says it could be true. According to Vastu Shastra, an ancient Indian architectural design system, even something as basic as where you keep your shoes impacts your health and finances. Do you want to know how?

We spoke to Mumbai-based Vastu consultant Isha Sinhal for tips on the right placement of footwear in homes and other spaces. Here’s what she suggests.

Shoe storage: Significance in Vastu Shastra

“Shoes represent external energy like dust, vibrations, and impressions from the outside world,” Isha says. “When placed incorrectly, they disturb the energetic balance of your home, especially near sacred or high-energy zones.” Wrong footwear placement also hinders clarity, creates energetic heaviness, and blocks prosperity, according to Vastu expert Isha Sinhal. So, what is the right direction to keep your shoes per Vastu?

Do you want to ensure harmony in your home? Isha suggests placing a shoe cabinet in the South-Southwest zones of your house. You should avoid keeping a shoe rack in the Northeast, East or the centre of your home. These are sacred directions linked with prosperity and spiritual well-being. Keeping shoes in these areas can disrupt the positive aura of the entire space. According to Isha, you should also avoid piling up or keeping shoes in an open view, especially in the living room, temple area, or bedroom. This can disrupt the emotional tone of your home.

If you keep your shoes outside the main door, keep the cabinet covered and closed, Isha suggests. “Place it slightly away from the door, not in front of it,” she added. Isha warns against keeping frequently used or dirty shoes scattered at the entrance, as this blocks fresh opportunities. But how can you follow these Vastu tips for the home entrance in small apartments or flats?

Vastu-friendly options for storing shoes in small spaces

While the correct footwear placement is necessary, we understand that it isn’t feasible for everyone to follow these tips. Are you living in a rented place or a small apartment with no space for a proper shoe cabinet? Isha has some Vastu-friendly tips for you.

“You must use vertical, closed shoe cabinets in the South-Southwest zone of the home. Opt for entryway benches or a foyer with built-in storage or pull-out drawers, and always keep them closed,” Vastu expert Isha Sinhal says. Do you have an under-bed shoe storage in your home? The Vastu consultant recommends avoiding it completely as “it disrupts rest and retention energy, especially in the bedroom.” But if you still face issues keeping shoes correctly, some crystals always come in handy. Here’s how.

Vastu Shastra relies on crystals, salt bowls, incense sticks, and other materials to absorb and neutralise negative energy. This promotes positive vibrations in homes and other spaces.

“Keep a bowl of rock salt or camphor near or inside the shoe cabinet to absorb stale or negative energy. You can also place a black tourmaline crystal near the shoe rack to protect yourself from the incoming energetic disturbance. Burning incense occasionally in the entry area will refresh the space,” Isha suggests. However, you should avoid using too much incense daily as the fumes might cause respiratory issues or damage your footwear.
