Do you love the lush green leaves of money plants trailing from a bottle or pot around small corners or balconies? Apart from its aesthetic value, a money plant holds special significance in Vastu Shastra. The Indian architectural design system believes that a money plant brings good luck, wealth, and prosperity. According to Vastu, this beautiful plant could be your secret money magnet if you keep it in the right direction.

We asked Dr Neha Jain, Founder and Chief Vastu Consultant at Vastukarma, to recommend ways to use the money plant to attract wealth. Here’s what she suggests.

Ideal direction for placing a money plant

According to Dr Neha, you must keep a money plant in the North, East and Southeast to attract money and ease financial struggles. However, Vastu considers the Southeast as the most ideal direction to keep the money plant. This direction “is governed by the planet Venus and the fire element.” The Vastu expert added, “Money plants in water should always be kept in the North or East, and money plants in soil should always be kept in the East or Southeast. Many times, people place bottles of money plants in the Southeast. Being a fire direction, water disrupts its elemental energy.

Vastu Shastra gives equal importance to the money plant’s placement as much as its direction. Are you sure you’re keeping the plant the right way?

How to keep a money plant at home

If you want to reap the maximum benefits of the money plant, there are some common mistakes to avoid. Dr Neha suggested, “Money plant vines trailing on the floor are considered inauspicious. Let it climb a trellis or be placed in a hanging pot or elevated area.” Are the leaves of your money plant dead or withering away? “This can bring bad luck or financial blockages. Keep it lush and green with proper watering and pruning,” the Vastu expert said.

Any auspicious plant will be beneficial if you keep its positive energy alive. While you must continue to water them in recommended intervals, Dr Neha has some additional care tips that you must follow. “In Vastu, Friday is associated with Goddess Lakshmi (wealth), so you can light a diya or incense near the plant when you water it for extra energy,” the expert suggested. In Hindu tradition, kalawa or mouli, an auspicious thread, “symbolises protection, prosperity and positivity.” Tie this thread around the planter to attract wealth and good luck.

A small silver coin, clear quartz or citrine crystal kept in the pot can also amplify abundance energy,” said Dr Neha. She further highlighted the importance of “talking or praying to the money plant.” According to her, “Even though it sounds symbolic, intentional care strengthens your positive association with the plant.” Vastu Shastra associates the colour of the money plant with its directional energy. So, you must use different colours when placing the money plant in specific directions. For instance, “If you have kept your money plant in the East and Southeast, choose orange, red and green pots. If you have placed it in the North, choose a blue one,” explained Dr Neha. But what if you don’t want to keep natural money plants at all and prefer artificial plants? Can you still reap the Vastu benefits of a money plant?

Artificial money plants for attracting wealth

Is keeping plants a high-maintenance task for you? While this is understandable, an artificial money plant cannot fulfil the same purpose as a real one due to its inanimate nature. As Dr Neha puts it, “They do not emit life force (Chi or Prana). So, they can’t attract real energies. Dusty or neglected fake plants can block energy and bring stagnation rather than prosperity.” But there’s still a solution if you can’t keep a natural money plant.

According to the Vastu expert, “Images of lush green money plants, green foliage, or wealth symbols, including a money tree or coins, can act as reminders or intention tools. Hang them in the Southeast corner, the wealth zone, to enhance their symbolic effect.”

Does gifting a money plant take away your wealth?

People commonly fear that giving a money plant as a gift might rob them of their luck and fortune. However, Dr Neha busted the myth and shared how it only “brings prosperity and good wishes to the receiver.” According to her, “It symbolises sharing abundance and fostering growth in relationships. This will only enhance if you gift it with a positive intention instead of a casual giveaway.” If you’re still worried about giving away your luck to someone else, here’s what Dr Neha suggests. “Take a coin or crystal and bury it in the soil of your own money plant after gifting a cutting. Placing a fresh part of your own plant back into the water leads to renewal and abundance.”

Some people also believe that taking a cutting from someone else’s money plant brings bad luck. To this, the Vastu expert shared, “In many cultures, if you ask the person before using their money plant, it helps you inherit its positive energy, growth, and luck. However, avoid stealing or secretly taking a cutting as it carries negative karma or stagnant energy.”
