Are you thinking of adding a fountain or aquarium for a calming vibe at home? Think again, because it might lead to more chaos. According to Vastu Shastra, water features are not just about looks; they regulate the energy flow in your house. So, before installing a fancy indoor waterfall or a fish tank, you must know where and how to keep them.

We asked Mumbai-based Vastu consultant Isha Sinhal to suggest tips for the placement of water elements at home.

Vastu-approved ideal directions for water features

Water elements, including aquariums, fountains or even a simple flower-filled water bowl, are more than just pretty décor. If placed in the wrong direction, they might affect your cash inflow and health. So, follow these ideal directions to keep water features at home.

  • Northeast: The Vastu consultant considers this one of the most auspicious directions to keep water elements, including aquariums. “It enhances spiritual clarity, intuition, healing and mental peace,” Isha says.
  • North and East: These directions are good to keep water features if you’re aiming for wealth flow or career enhancement. Keeping a water element in the North will boost career opportunities and finances, according to Isha. “Water features placed in the East encourage growth and social connection,” she says.

You should avoid the South, Southeast, or the Brahmasthan (centre) of the home, as they are associated with the fire element. Keeping fountains, aquariums, or water bowls in these directions might lead to financial drain, health issues, and emotional instability. Some people also place big fountains near their home’s main entrances. But does Vastu approve of it?

Water fountain near home entrance

There’s no harm in placing a water fountain at the main entrance if kept correctly. Or else it will create an energy imbalance. “A small water bowl or fountain near the main door in the Northeast or North is fine if the layout allows,” Isha suggests. But she warns against placing them directly in front of the main entrance. You must also avoid placing water features in the South, Southeast, or immediately behind the main door. “This can disturb the home’s grounding energy and weaken stability,” Isha explains.

Vastu for aquariums: Which fish to keep and what to avoid

It is widely believed that some species of fish are lucky to keep at home. But is it even true? Yes, Vastu Shastra considers fish as symbols of good luck, wealth, and prosperity. Isha recommends keeping goldfish if you want to attract luck and financial stability. Fish like arowana or dragon fish bring prosperity only if you take care of them responsibly. Do you want to bring positivity to your home? Isha suggests keeping a black fish, like a black molly, as it absorbs negativity, cleansing the aura of your home.

You should avoid keeping aggressive fish or carnivorous marine species at home. These fish represent aggression and conflict, which makes them unlucky to keep at home. “Try avoiding keeping fish that are constantly unwell or inactive,” Isha says. Their stillness might block a regulated energy flow and prosperity. While every fish might seem pretty to keep in an aquarium, you must not overcrowd the space for them. Isha also suggests cleaning aquariums regularly to maintain a hygienic and healthy environment for the marine species.

Note: Keep a maximum of nine fish, including eight colourful ones and one black fish. This will balance out your home’s energy, attracting growth and prosperity.

Common mistakes to avoid while keeping water elements at home

Buying a beautiful water fountain or an aesthetic aquarium is not enough. You must know how to keep it so it doesn’t affect your health and finances. Isha suggests avoiding these common Vastu mistakes while keeping water elements, including fountains, at your home.

  • Placing them in Vastu-deficient directions like the South or Southeast.
  • Neglecting cleanliness, which might lead to stagnant or toxic energy.
  • Using dry or non-functional fountains.
  • Overusing water décor. Placing several bowls or tanks might create emotional imbalance.
  • Keeping water elements in bedrooms, especially near the head or the Southwest corner.

Should you keep plants near an indoor water fountain?

Some people also keep lush green plants near water fountains or bowls in their house. Is it good to combine water and earth elements in Vastu? “Yes, but you must balance their energy to ensure harmony,” Isha says. According to the Vastu consultant, combining live plants with water elements in the Northeast or East
enhances freshness, growth, and peace at home. You must use mud or terracotta pots, natural planters, and floating flower bowls as they radiate calmness. Isha suggests avoiding plastic plants, cacti, and dry or dead foliage near water zones. This emits negative energy, triggering conflicts and stress. “You must not overcrowd the area with plants as water needs space to flow energetically,” Isha says.
