You’re not just taking a dump in your washroom, you might also be flushing out your peace there. Sounds weird, right? According to Vastu, a wrongly-placed washroom can disrupt the balance of the entire home. It can affect your luck, finances, love life, health, and more.

We asked Vastu consultant Anchal Gupta Jhawar about directions and placement for bathrooms. Here’s how to get it right.

Ideal directions for bathrooms in the home

According to Vastu Shastra, there are 16 directional zones catering to different aspects of life. “Only three directions or disposal zones are best suited for washrooms and bathrooms,” Anchal says. The Vastu expert suggests placing bathrooms only in the West of Northwest, East of Southeast or the South of Southwest zones. “These zones naturally support waste removal and detoxification, making them the most harmonious placements for bathrooms,” Anchal says. But what if your bathrooms are placed wrong? How does that affect your life?

“When bathrooms fall outside these disposal zones, they can interfere with the energies associated with those directions,” Anchal says. It can impact cash flow, emotional well-being, relationships, career growth, opportunities, and overall harmony at home, according to the Vastu expert.

Vastu remedies for bathrooms placed in the wrong direction

Anchal explains that authentic Vastu Shastra rarely recommends demolishing a structure if it is placed in the wrong direction. So, you shouldn’t stress about it either. All you need to do is follow a simple colour theory to rebalance the energy. Anchal suggests placing coloured tape on three outer sides of the commode. This way, you symbolically buffer it from the non-disposal zones and strengthen the zone’s natural element. Here are some Vastu-approved colour tapes you should place for the following zones of your washroom.

  • North: Blue
  • East: Green
  • South: Red
  • Southwest: Yellow
  • West: White

Does the direction of the commode matter too? “No, in Vastu, the placement of the bathroom matters far more than the direction of the toilet seat,” Anchal says. She suggests placing the commode in the North when in use, as it supports the natural downward movement of waste. As long as the commode is placed in one of the three disposal zones, it remains energetically balanced. Apart from the direction of the bathroom and the commode, there’s one more element that influences the home’s energy: bathroom drains.

What often goes unnoticed is the drainage flow, but it plays a surprisingly big role in influencing the energy of your home. A bathroom’s drainage system dictates how smoothly water and energy exit the space. Are you getting your home constructed from scratch? “Then the water flow or drain outlet should be positioned toward the North or East as the floor’s slope should be towards these zones,” Anchal suggests. But what if you live in a rented home where you can’t move your bathroom drains?

“In such cases, it’s best not to get anxious or overly rigid about it as Vastu supports everyday living,” Anchal suggests. If the bathroom is already in a disposal zone and well-maintained, the home’s energy remains balanced. The bathroom’s placement and drainage aren’t the only elements influencing your home’s energy. The washroom’s colour palette plays its part too.

Which colours should you use on your bathroom walls?

Have you ever walked into a bathroom and instantly felt calmer? Now, have you also gone to a washroom that only made you more irritated? That’s where the colour theory is at play. According to Anchal, a bathroom’s ideal colour usually depends on the direction it faces. Each zone carries a unique energy, and if you match it with the right colour, it boosts harmony. But what can you do if the zonal colours aren’t known, especially in rented or pre-built homes?

“You can safely choose neutral earthy tones like off-white, beige, cream, or light sand,” Anchal suggests. These shades are universally grounding, visually calming, and suitable for any bathroom. Anchal also recommends using only earthy tones or zonal colours for the bathroom, rather than following trends.

Is it okay to have a bathroom attached to the bedroom?

This is the most common question people have when getting their bathroom constructed. Given the small spaces, rental homes, and modern architecture, many of us don’t have an entirely separate washroom. So, does an attached bathroom in your bedroom bring negative energy into your home? “This idea is largely a myth,” Anchal says.

What truly matters is where the bathroom is located within the home’s Vastu grid. “As long as it falls within one of the appropriate disposal zones and is well-maintained, ventilated, and clean, it won’t disturb the bedroom’s energy,” Anchal explains. So, instead of avoiding attached bathrooms, just make sure they are placed in the right direction and stay fresh and functional.
