Your pet rules your heart, but is their energy good for your home too? Those furry friends are cute, but the way you keep them can affect you and your family members’ lives. According to Vastu Shastra, pets carry living prana and constantly radiate energy around the home.
We spoke to Mumbai-based Vastu consultant Isha Sinhal for tips on keeping a pet at home. Here’s what she suggests.

Pets affect the energy flow in your home: What Vastu says

According to Isha, the presence of a pet naturally lifts the vibration of a space, reduces negativity, and increases emotional warmth. “A happy pet balances energies that may otherwise remain stagnant or heavy,” she says. While pets are cute, do you know which animals are best to keep at home?
Which pets bring good luck?
From wagging tails, lazy cats, to chirping birds, each pet adds its own energy to where it lives. But Vastu says that some pets align better with the vibe of your home than others. And in today’s compact homes, choosing the right pet ensures they thrive without feeling caged.
Isha suggests keeping dogs as they are the most Vastu-aligned pets. Their loyal and grounded nature elevates the space and protects your home from negative energies. But if you’re a cat person, don’t despair. “Cats are also positive, especially for enhancing intuition,” Isha says. In rural homes, people also keep bulls and cows as they are considered highly auspicious. But you must provide them with the space they require to live. Do you want to keep other pets besides dogs and cats? Isha suggests keeping animals like rabbits and birds only if you keep them respectfully and ethically.
Is it better to adopt or buy a pet?

Vastu Shastra follows Vedic astrology, where adopting a pet is seen as a karmic act of compassion. It strengthens the dharmic energy in a home and builds a deeper emotional bond, according to Isha. “Rescued animals often carry a spiritual connection and bring healing energy into the household,” says the Vastu consultant.
While you can also buy a pet of your choice, you must consider them equal to any other living being. Some people also believe that animals can be lucky or unlucky. They even consider dark-skinned, especially black-coloured animals, to bring bad luck. But is that true?
Are black cats and dogs considered unlucky for pet owners?

In Vastu Shastra, black cats and dogs are associated with Saturn and are believed to absorb negative energies. Rather than being unlucky, Isha considers such animals protectors who shield the home from stress, evil eye, and emotional imbalance. “Their presence is grounding and spiritually significant,” she says.
Keeping pets at home can deprive animals of their natural habitat. So, is that unlucky as well? Here’s what the Vastu consultant says.
“Yes, caging animals, especially birds, fish, and tortoises, goes against Vastu and natural law,” says Isha. But if you’re still keeping these animals as pets, you should be respectful of their natural environment. “Birds should have space to stretch or fly. Fish tanks should be cleaned regularly,” Isha suggests. Do you have pet tortoises at home? Isha warns against keeping them in tight cages or purely decorative bowls. They must be treated with care and purpose.
Vastu for pets’ beds and resting areas

Before you buy that aesthetic bed for your pet, do you know the best direction to place it in your home? Isha suggests keeping a pet’s bed in the South or Southwest zone of your house. “These directions offer warmth, protection, and grounding,” she says. The Vastu expert suggests avoiding the Northeast direction to make a resting area for your pets. “This is a spiritually sensitive area only meant for prayer, meditation, or stillness,” Isha explains. But what if your pets sleep with you in your room, on your bed?
According to Isha, pets can sleep in the owner’s bedroom, but not on the owner’s bed. Instead, she recommends placing a dedicated pet bed on the floor, slightly away from where you sleep. “This maintains energetic boundaries and ensures peaceful, undisturbed rest for both the pet and owner,” Isha says.
Ideal directions to place a pet’s food and litter boxes

Just like humans, pets need their cosy corners to enjoy their food or defecate comfortably. As we follow the right directions for our dining tables and washrooms, the same goes for our pets too. Isha suggests placing your pets’ food and water bowls in the Northwest to ensure movement and support. “Litter boxes or pads should go in low-traffic South or West corners,” Isha recommends. You should never keep them in the kitchen, prayer area, or the Northeast as they are the most spiritual zones of the home. The waste will radiate negative energy, impacting your home’s aura. You must follow these Vastu tips for your pets so they grow and thrive in a good environment.
