Does your child struggle to fall asleep even when tired? Do they often get irritated and cranky? Before you blame nutrition, screen time, or your child’s friend circle, take a look at the one place in which they spend most of their time: their room. Sometimes, a child might be getting the right nutrition and have limited screen time but could still get grumpy over the smallest things. That could be because your child’s bedroom isn’t Vastu-aligned.

We asked Vastu consultant Richa Pathak about directions and layout for a child’s room. Here’s how to get it right.

Ideal direction to place the bed in a child’s room

Richa considers a child’s room as their emotional cocoon, the space that shapes how safe, calm, and confident they feel. That’s why the direction your child sleeps in matters more than you realise. “When a child sleeps with the bed’s headboard towards the South or East, the body relaxes more naturally, and the mind settles with ease,” Richa says. Many parents notice their kids sleeping better and waking up fresher in the mornings after making this slight shift. Apart from the direction, you must ensure the bed feels stable and supported with a solid headboard or a wall. “A solid wall gives a child a subconscious sense of protection and grounding that they may never express in words, but always feel,” Richa says.

Which colours to use in a child’s room?

While you might think bright yellow or dark pink looks vibrant, do you know how it is affecting your child’s emotions? Dark or loud colours, especially in bedrooms, can unknowingly make children restless or irritable. Richa suggests using soft shades like light green, pastel yellow, peach, cream, or sky blue for a child’s room. These colours create a sense of calm and openness, improving emotional balance and focus. “You must also allow sunlight during the day, and use warm, gentle lighting in the evening,” Richa recommends. This will help your child’s mind naturally shift into a state of rest.

Nothing brings a playful vibe to a child’s room like cutesy cartoons, posters, and games. But Vastu encourages balance. Richa suggests placing happy, calming visuals to support your child’s emotional wellbeing. But overly aggressive or intense visuals can overstimulate young minds. The same applies to décor. “Too many soft toys, games or excessive décor can create clutter, which subtly affects calmness,” Richa says. A few playful elements work best when the room still feels open, breathable, and easy to move around in.

Vastu for furniture in a child’s room

Does your child struggle to focus while studying even after multiple routine changes? It’s time to shift their study table to a Vastu-approved direction. “Place the study desk in the West or Southwest with your child facing the East or North direction,” Richa suggests. This will improve your child’s concentration and memory retention. “Sitting with a wall behind them gives children a sense of stability and confidence,” Richa says. Avoid creating study areas under beams or in cramped corners. This can create subtle mental pressure, making study time too stressful.

Does Vastu approve modern furniture like bunk beds and loft beds?

Yes, in Vastu Shastra, such furniture is perfectly acceptable as far as the room feels open, well-lit, and well-ventilated,” Richa says. But she suggests avoiding heavy storage units or sharp beams directly above the sleeping area. This can make a child feel energetically confined rather than relaxed. Apart from furniture, does the placement of mirrors in children’s rooms affect their mood?

Vastu guidelines for the placement of mirrors in a child’s room

Kids love mirrors — watching themselves eat, making faces, or just playing around. But mirror placement matters. Richa warns against placing mirrors that reflect the bed. This can disrupt your child’s sleep, creating unnecessary mental activity. And that’s why Richa suggests placing mirrors inside the kids’ wardrobes. But what if you have placed a mirror that reflects their bed? ” You can cover those mirrors at night to improve your child’s sleep quality,” Richa recommends. “Your child may not understand Vastu, but they feel its effect every single day.”
