Where to place diyas, religious items, and festive decor: Vastu tips

Not sure where to keep diyas and other religious items to attract health and goodness? Isha Sinhal suggests energising some directions of your home so luck finds its way to you and your family. Here’s how to activate these corners of your home.
- Northeast: Vastu refers to this zone as ishaan kon, the most sacred corner of your home. So, you must keep it clean, well-lit, and bright. “Place a water bowl, crystal, or diya here to attract divine blessings,” Isha recommends.
- North: In Vastu Shastra, Lord Kuber (god of wealth) rules this direction. Isha suggests energising this zone with fresh flowers, a money plant, or a crystal globe to invite financial growth.
- East: This direction symbolises sunrise and new beginnings in Vastu. “Activate this space with fresh flowers and soft lighting this Diwali to attract vitality and joy,” Isha says.
Energising these spaces will bring the maximum benefits if you also declutter the auspicious corners of your home.
Areas to declutter before festivals: Vastu Shastra
Before you get ready to welcome prosperity, make sure that nothing is standing in its way. Here’s how you can declutter these areas in your home this Diwali.
- Main entrance: In Vastu, the doorway of your home is the mouth of energy. Isha suggests removing broken items, dusty mats, and unused shoes to keep this space clean. You must also keep the entrance well-lit, as darkness might block incoming opportunities.
- Northeast: Not only should you keep this corner clear of dust, but you must also remove all electronic items from here.
- Kitchen and storage: To bring abundance to your home, remove old grains, expired food, and unused utensils. You must also wash the utensils every night to keep the sink clean.
- Under beds and corners: These zones absorb the maximum negative energy as they’re always dusty and untidy. Isha recommends clearing such stagnant spaces to ensure a better flow of positive energy.
Apart from these areas, you must ensure that you don’t store torn calendars, broken idols, or dried flowers anywhere in your home. Isha also suggests avoiding quarrels or negative conversations around the festive time, as our words carry vibrations. The more bitter you speak, the more negative energy you attract. The Vastu expert also warns against spending your money impulsively during Diwali. We all tend to go a bit overboard with our money during the festive season, but this wastefulness also creates an imbalance in wealth flow.
Vastu-compliant festive décor: Ideal colours

When it comes to festive décor, colours are the main character. They don’t just enhance your home, they unlock your space to attract abundance. Isha recommends using some Vastu-compliant colours that will bring positivity to your spaces this Diwali. “Use golden and yellow colours to attract wealth, radiance, and blessings from Goddess Lakshmi,” she says.
Home décor in red and orange shades enhances festive energy, making your space more auspicious. “Use the colour green to promote healing, growth, and harmony in relationships,” the Vastu expert suggests. Do you want to attract peace, purity, and divine vibrations in your home and office spaces? Isha recommends using peaceful colours like white and silver. Once you’ve picked the right colours, it’s time to take things up a notch by placing auspicious items in your home.
Ideal directions to energise with crystals and attract wealth
Isha suggests keeping a Kuber idol in the North to attract wealth. “In the Northeast, keep a clear quartz crystal or a silver kalash filled with water, mango leaves and a coconut for divine flow,” she says. You can also place a pyrite stone or red flowers in the Southeast zone of your home to enhance financial flow. Isha recommends keeping an amethyst crystal in the West to promote harmony and solve misunderstandings with your loved ones.
Best directions to place diyas, lights, and idols
Here is where you should place diyas, decorative lights, and idols in your home for Diwali 2025.
- Diyas: “Place them in the Southeast and at the main entrance. Light at least one diya with ghee every evening,” Isha suggests.
- Lights: Decorate the walls and windows of the North and East with bright lighting. This will enhance prosperity and invite auspicious energies.
- Idols: “Place Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesh in the North, facing the East. You must ensure that the idols are placed on a clean altar with a lit diya nearby,” Isha says.
Vastu-related rituals to welcome the divine energy

“A simple Lakshmi-Ganesh puja or hawan can energise your space. But you can also follow some rituals to enhance that energy,” Isha says. You can light a diya in the Southeast and chant mantras to worship Ashtalakshmi, the eight forms of Goddess Lakshmi. “Sprinkle holy gangajal or rose water across the home to refresh energies. You must also offer fresh flowers and fruits daily during the festival week to maintain positivity,” Isha says.
