Do you think that choosing a wall paint is just about aesthetics? Not really. According to Vastu Shastra, the colours in which you paint your walls decide the energy of your space. This further impacts your emotions. The wrong shade can lead to stress, negativity, or even block prosperity. So, before you choose a Pinterest-perfect colour palette, figure out which shade is right for each space in your home.
We asked Mumbai-based Vastu consultant Isha Sinhal to suggest which colours to avoid while painting your home walls.

1. Blue colour in the kitchen

In Vastu Shastra, Agni, the fire element, governs the kitchen in a home. And blue represents water. So, Isha suggests avoiding this colour in the kitchen, as it directly clashes with the fire element in Vastu. “This also weakens digestive health and causes emotional coldness in the family,” Isha says.
Colours to use in the kitchen: The Vastu consultant recommends using shades like orange, brick red and peach in a home kitchen to support warmth, appetite, and nourishment.
2. Grey in the bedroom

Isha recommends avoiding grey in the bedroom as it creates emotional dullness and disconnection among the people living in that space. Vastu considers the colour grey unlucky as it lacks warmth, which is needed the most in this part of the home. Using grey in the bedroom might even lead to depression, fatigue, or a lack of intimacy.
Colours to use in the bedroom: Shades such as soft pink, peach, or light, earthy tones like beige are best suited for bedroom walls in Vastu Shastra. “They bring in emotional comfort and romance,” Isha says.
3. Black in the dining room

Vastu usually considers black an unlucky colour for the home as it absorbs all the energy coming its way. “When used in the dining room, this shade creates a heavy, cold atmosphere in a space meant for family bonding and shared meals,” Isha says. She cautions against using black in the dining space, as it might reduce appetite and cause emotional detachment.
Colours to use in the dining room: “Choose light yellow, cream, or pastel tones to encourage warmth and connection during meals,” Isha recommends.
4. Red in the washroom

In Vastu Shastra, the water element dominates the washrooms of your home. And red represents fire, clashing violently with water. “This can cause energetic imbalance, leading to aggression, poor skin conditions, or financial drain,” Isha says.
Colours to use in the bathroom: The Vastu expert suggests using hues like white, aqua blue, or pale grey for calmness and cleanliness in the washroom area.
5. Dark colours for the balcony

Balconies are designed to bring in fresh air and light, refreshing you from within. It’s also a space where people release their stress, indulge in yoga or exercise, or find hope in nature. So, you must avoid using dark shades in balconies. This might block openness and reduce pranic energy flow, according to Isha.
Colours to use in the balcony: “Go for shades like light greens, whites, or sky blue to invite harmony and freshness,” Isha recommends.
6. Dark red and black for the staircase

According to Isha, staircases represent movement between energy levels in the home. So, you must always choose colours that are grounded, stable, and neutral. Choosing dark shades of red, black, brown, and so on, in the staircase area will significantly impact your mood, and you’ll take that energy into your home.
Colours to use for the staircase: “Cream is considered the best and most Vastu-compliant colour for staircases across all zones,” Isha says. It brings balance, supports safe movement, and suits every directional zone without conflict. Cream also reflects light gently and doesn’t overpower the space energetically. This ultimately leads to a good energy flow in your home.
