If you and your father are in a relationship that can be best defined as ‘it’s complicated’, you’re not alone. Read this review of The Mehta Boys, and you’ll know why you need to watch it with your dad.
A tale of grief, loss, and empathy
Shiv Mehta (Boman Irani) is grieving the loss of his beloved wife, Shivani, who recently passed away. His children, Anu (Puja Sarup) and Amay (Avinash Tiwary), fly down to meet their father and pay their respects. Shiv and Shivani made a deal that between the two of them, whoever lived longer would have to shift to America with their daughter. So, Shiv has to honour the promise and wrap up his life to move away with Anu. But a delay in his flight leaves him with his son instead for 48 hours, making it extremely awkward. Amay can’t stand his father and moved to Mumbai years ago to become an architect. But since the shift, he hasn’t been able to land on his feet, and his father disapproves of his lack of effort in his career.

For the sake of Shivani and Anu, the two stubborn men decide to stay together in Amay’s Mumbai flat. What’s the worst that can happen in two days, right?
Amay and Shiv’s tricky relationship is relatable and heartwarming
Throughout the film, you’ll find the story a little too relatable. Handshakes as goodbye, banter between old and new schools of thought, and a couple of heartwarming scenes show the raw and very real relationship between the Mehta Boys. Stuck in his ways, the elder Mehta doesn’t view anything as home and knows his wife is making him stay back for a reason. The younger Mehta, who’s even more stubborn, doesn’t realise his father isn’t fighting him; he’s just protecting and preparing him for the world.

Boman Irani, as a stuck-up father grieving the loss of his wife, brings life to Shiv Mehta’s character. His anecdotes, old family stories, and some dad jokes make you feel his pain but also make you enjoy every bit of his presence. Avinash Tiwary creatively fills in the shoes of Amay Mehta, a young architect trying to navigate his life in Mumbai. Puja Sarup as Anu Mehta might have a short role, but she impresses you without trying. And Shreya Chaudhry as Zara, Amay’s colleague and girlfriend, is supportive, smart, and lends an interesting arc to the father-son relationship.
Can you watch it with your family?: Yes, The Mehta Boys is a clean, family-friendly film. Watch it with your parents, especially your father.
