Do you remember the 2006 Noida Nithari Case? The brutal real-life story has been turned into a film, Sector 36. The incidents were so gory and frightful that it only felt too important to present the whole case to the audience so we never forget the heinous crimes. The movie is a fictionalised piece of the infamous case where a serial killer abducted children and raped women. Surinder Koli, a cannibal, was behind several serial murders and sexual assaults. The crime scene was the house of a businessman, Moninder Singh Pandher, who was also the mastermind behind the monstrous crime.
Starring Vikrant Massey as Prem, who kidnaps and murders children, Sector 36 presents the gruesome details of the real incident. Aditya Nimbalkar’s direction has done wonders, as evident in the movie. Sector 36 unveils the brutality of society and the fight against the system.

The movie builds on Isaac Newton’s third law of motion, which states, “For every action, there’s an equal and opposite reaction”. Sector 36 brings out the adversity of the system workings and the class structures, which crushes down the underprivileged. Deepak Dobriyal, playing the role of Inspector Ram Charan Pandey, a cop, is compelled to eradicate systemic corruption when it comes to his family. Does he succeed in doing so?
Either courageous or a fool
Sector 36 is an astounding representation of people who choose the country above themselves. The movie starts with Inspector Ram Charan, an unbothered cop, for whom the missing reports of innocent children are just open and shut case files. According to him, whoever comes forward to fight against the system is “mahasahsi ya murkh“. He creates a parallel between a courageous person and a cockroach as he says, “cockroach kitni bhi body banale, jeet hamesha joote ki hoti hai“. And his logic eventually turns out to be true, for he becomes the cockroach. He does everything in his power to reach the truth, but the system and his people fail him.
The movie lives up to its thrill as you will feel a shiver down your spine while constantly feeling numbed. The movie is a reminder of all those children who lost their lives at the hands of these vicious criminals. The class hierarchies are well portrayed, as the police succeed in finding the kidnapped son from an affluent family while ignoring the continuous kidnapping of slum children. Are downtrodden people not part of our society? Are they so disadvantaged that they don’t even have the right to count on police officers who are ultimately meant to protect all of us?
Caught in the act
The well-directed movie deserves a big round of applause for its actors. Vikrant Massey and Deepak Dobriyal do justice to their respective roles. Vikrant Massey is terrifically versatile in the movie as the serial killer. He would make you feel scared of him, and you wouldn’t complain as he delivers how dangerous the incident was in reality. Vikrant fantastically plays the psychopath who murders children during the day and enjoys Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) as a common man at night. His interaction with Inspector Ram Charan will shake you to the core. On the other hand, Deepak Dobriyal astonishes us with his chase game as an inspector. His incredibility is evident in the movie as he fights the system, trying not to get engulfed in the mush.
As a thriller movie based on real events, Sector 36 becomes a must-watch if you love the genre. From the beginning to the climax, every scene will grip you tightly. At one moment, you’ll sit nervously with your hands over your mouth, unable to process the reality. Enter the next moment when you can’t get enough of the brilliant casting and film direction.
Sector 36 is now streaming on Netflix.
Can you watch it with your family?: The movie contains gory details and obscene language. It requires viewer discretion as it includes depictions of child abuse and references to sexual violence.
