The trailer of Phule opens with Jyotiba Phule (Pratik Gandhi), also known as Jyotirao Phule, expressing his dream of an ideal India. He wishes to live in a society of equals who are not ruled by any leader. He wants to free his people from the orthodox practices prevalent in Indian society. Phule‘s trailer highlights the contribution of Jyotiba and Savitribai in reforming women’s education, abolishing practices against widows, and fighting for Dalit rights.
However, the battle is anything but easy for the couple, fighting off a conservative society that hated social reform. A striking scene from the trailer reveals Patralekhaa’s commendable role in the movie as Savitribai Phule. She says, “Vidhwa hona bhagya mein hai, ganja hona nahin.” This points to the times when Indian widows had to shave their heads and wear only white clothes after the death of their husbands.
The trailer of Phule promises an exciting biographical drama for the viewers. It digs up a sensitive issue that has prevailed in India for ages. Moreover, it reveals how some women might still be facing the horrors of these practices in the presence of conservative minds. The trailer’s compelling story, powerful dialogues and strong direction have generated excitement in the audience. The movie Phule is set to release on April 11, 2025, which also marks Jyotiba Phule’s birth anniversary.
