But instead of rehashing the usual titles like English Vinglish and Tumhari Sulu, I have some lesser-known gems you should watch if you loved Mrs.

1. Sukhee

Just like Mrs, Sukhee sheds light on the struggles of a married woman. The movie follows the life of Sukhpreet (Sukhee), played by Shilpa Shetty, who is bored of her mundane life limited to the four walls of her house. She decides to attend her school reunion in Delhi and relives her life as a 17-year-old. The movie shows Sukhee’s transformation from a mother and wife to a woman.

Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey is a Malayalam film. It follows Jaya’s life from childhood to adulthood and the injustices she has been subjected to. Jaya wants to study, but she’s married off, and her husband is a proper male chauvinist who makes fun of her dreams. The movie focuses on Jaya’s journey, but instead of being preachy, it deals with the themes subtly. It conveys the right message mixed with comedy, which makes it palatable and also hard-hitting.

Tarla is the biopic of one of the most iconic chefs in India, Tarla Dalal. The movie traces her journey from a housewife to a Padma Shri Award-winning chef and food writer. Even though her journey is quite unique, it still resonates with most Indian women.

4. How Old Are You

Another Malayalam film that deals with the theme of a woman unearthing her long-buried identity. The movie follows the life of 36-year-old Nirupama Rajeev, who works as a UD clerk in the Revenue Department. Nothing is interesting about her life, but she yearns for a change. Her life takes a turn when circumstances reintroduce her to her ex-classmate Susan, who is a successful businesswoman now. Susan reminds Nirupama of her young, enthusiastic self and how she should bring her back.

5. Astitva

This 2000s film featuring Tabu explores themes of male chauvinism, spousal abuse and extramarital affairs. The story follows the life of two women, Aditi and Meghna, who, in their different ways, are struggling in a patriarchal society. The movie is about a woman trying to find her identity outside of her marriage.

The Great Indian Kitchen is a Malayalam film which has served as a source of inspiration for Mrs. Even though it follows the same storyline as Mrs, it has Malayali cultural references. Watch this film if you want a peek into South Indian culture or just want to watch the original version of Mrs.
