Netflix’s latest crime drama Mai has been garnering appreciation since the launch of its trailer. With a thrilling storyline and strong characters, there’s no way we could’ve missed this one.
Set in the shady and infamous lanes of Lucknow, it brings out the dirty deeds and shady lives of big business tycoons. But what will surprise you the most is the character of Sheel, the grieving mother played by Sakshi Tanwar. The things she is ready to do to avenge the murder of her daughter will blow your mind. Here’s our review of Mai, a story of a mother seeking vengeance for her daughter, directed by Atul Mongia.
A tragic murder posed as an accident
Supriya, played by Wamiqa Gabbi, loses her vocal cords at a young age and is a mute stand-up comedian. But just because she can’t speak doesn’t mean that she doesn’t have the guts to speak the truth. The show starts with a troubled Supriya trying to hide some things from her parents. But before she can reveal what’s troubling her, she is run over by a truck. Initially, the case is treated as an accident till Sheel starts to notice that it isn’t as simple as that.
Once she realises that her daughter’s death wasn’t an accident but a planned murder, Sheel knows that she has to find out the truth. And this is the turning point of the series when her soft, demure character turns into a grieving mother who will do anything to avenge her daughter. But what she doesn’t know is that she is stepping into the dangerous and scheming world of corruption and big money. With human trafficking, scams, and money laundering, every step ahead gets Sheel into more trouble.
Deceit, scams, and raging violence
Sheel might not know what lies ahead of her but she does know that she won’t back down. And even when some unsettling facts unveil themselves in front of her, it only makes her more fierce and merciless. Looking to solve the case, Sheel starts to learn a lot of things about her daughter.
Supriya’s relationship with a police officer who is now handling her case gets Sheel suspicious. But that is not the only person with a twisted storyline here. Jawahar, a fraudulent businessman played by Prashant Narayanan, misuses his power and is often involved in scams and other unlawful activities. He is also the son of a patient at an old age home that Sheel volunteers at. This is only the beginning of a storyline that has several gripping twists and turns.
Powerful characters and a strong cast
Sakshi Tanwar, as Sheel, carries the show on her shoulders and never falters, no matter what comes her way. Prashant (Anant Vidhaat) and Shankar (Vaibhav Raj Gupta), Jawahar’s main men, do a commendable job. Along with that, Wamiqa plays a strong role as a mute person and perfectly fits the role of Supriya. Other supporting actors include Vivek Mushran who plays the role of Yash, Sheel’s husband, who adds his own depth to the story. Raima Sen, as Neelam, aces the role of Jawahar’s mistress with her statement cigarette and unnerving look throughout.
If you’re looking for an intense crime drama with great performances and mind-blowing twists, you should watch Mai this weekend.
