Streaming platforms are obsessed with reinventing the family drama, and Prime Video’s Maa Ka Sum walks right into that space with a rather unusual premise. It is an offbeat and quirky idea: a son using mathematics to solve his mother’s love life. Sounds intriguing, doesn’t it? This curiosity is exactly what pulls you in. But does the show manage to hold your attention beyond the initial hook? Read our Maa Ka Sum series review to find out.
Maa Ka Sum review: A fresh idea that doesn’t always add up

We see a single mother, Vinita (Mona Singh), who is trying to find love, but her right swipes never turn out to be the right match. Agastya (Mihir Ahuja), her son, uses his mathematical brain to hack the algorithm of the dating app to find the perfect partner for his mom.
The biggest win of the series is the concept. It’s genuinely refreshing. Instead of melodrama or over-the-top conflict, the show leans into a clever, slightly nerdy premise wrapped in emotional storytelling. However, as Maa Ka Sum unfolds, it becomes clear that while the idea is strong, the execution doesn’t always keep up. The show occasionally tries to juggle too many themes like parenting, loneliness, modern relationships, and mental health, and not all of them land as well as they should. Maa Ka Sum also gets overly dramatic towards the end, drifting away from its original premise.
Another aspect where the series shines is the emotional backbone of the show — the mother-son relationship. Their interactions feel natural, sometimes funny, and occasionally quite touching. It’s in these moments that we see the creators’ vision come alive. There’s no performance in the conversations, which makes the scenes feel relatable. But the series focuses too much on math and matches, so the relationship takes a backseat. Moreover, certain subplots feel underdeveloped, while others seem to stretch longer than necessary, making the series longer than it should have been. The pacing of the series feels inconsistent, too, with one episode being breezy and another quite sluggish.
Mona Singh holds it all together

If there’s one reason to stick with the show, it’s Mona Singh. She brings a grounded, effortless warmth to her character that makes even the weaker moments watchable. There’s no unnecessary dramatics, rather just a very real portrayal of a woman navigating life, motherhood, and the possibility of love again. Her performance feels lived-in, not performed. And honestly, without her, the series would have struggled to maintain its emotional core.
Mihir Ahuja, as Agastya, provides solid support for Mona Singh’s Vinita and holds his own as a math prodigy. Mihir manages to portray Agastya’s desperation to prove everything through numbers and equations with the right amount of emotion.
Overall, the Maa Ka Sum series is a fun and unique take on love and logic, even if it gets messy towards the end.
Can you watch Maa Ka Sum with your family?: Yes, the series is mostly clean except for a couple of quick kissing scenes.
