The series opens with the murder of an NRI groom, Paul, on the eve of his wedding in rural Punjab. He is brutally beaten, and his throat is slit, while his best man, Liam, goes missing the same night. Investigating the case is Sub-Inspector Balbir Singh, assisted by Amarpal Garundi. Together, they dig deeper into the case to find Liam, Paul’s murderer, and the truth behind what initially looks like a robbery gone wrong.

As the investigation progresses, the cops uncover that Paul was involved in a secret relationship with another man while being engaged to Veera, whose own past includes an emotionally intense relationship with her friend Saakaar. These revelations widen the suspect list and shift the case from theft to personal motives.

The suspects

After a thorough investigation, police officers Balbir and Amarpal narrow their suspicions to five key suspects in Paul’s murder and Liam’s disappearance. This includes Saakaar, an absconding bus driver, two truck drivers, and a local junkie. Through this story, Kohrra Season 1 also portrays the deep-rooted drug addiction crisis among Punjab’s youth. The series then shifts to the flawed lives of Balbir and Amarpal. Balbir, a conservative father, struggles to accept his daughter Nimrat returning home with her child after leaving her husband. Meanwhile, Amarpal grapples with his own emotional mess as his sister-in-law, secretly in love with him, refuses to move on. Their unresolved personal lives repeatedly interfere with the investigation, complicating an already sensitive case.

Uncovering the truth

The six-episode series finally comes to an end with Kulli, a drug peddler, confessing to brutally smashing Paul’s head, leaving him critically injured. But he denies claims of slitting Paul’s throat. Upon further investigation, Balbir and Amarpal learn about Paul and Liam’s romantic relationship. When they reveal the truth to their families, Steve, Paul’s conservative father, lashes out upon knowing his son’s sexuality.

Soon, the cops discover that Liam and Paul had earlier confronted Saakaar, Veera’s ex-boyfriend. After that, Paul went to see Veera, who ultimately came clean about her past before the wedding. When Paul still hesitates to reveal his sexuality to his family, a heated argument breaks out between him and Liam. In a moment of panic, Liam impulsively slits Paul’s throat. As he calls his mother to confess, Liam is hit by a speeding truck and dies on the spot.

Witnessing how Paul and Liam’s lives unravelled due to fear, secrecy, and lack of familial acceptance, Balbir is compelled to confront his flawed parenting. The season ends with Balbir supporting Nimrat’s decision to divorce her husband and encouraging her to rekindle her relationship with her college boyfriend, Karan.
