It’s not always about how you cook. Sometimes, it’s also about where you cook. Your recipe might be perfect, but if your kitchen isn’t in the right direction, it can lead to conflicts, poor finances, and health issues. According to Vastu Shastra, an ancient Indian architectural design system, Agni, the fire element, rules the kitchen. So, the kitchen must be placed correctly to balance the fire element. Do you want to know what the right direction is to set a kitchen according to Vastu?

We spoke to Mumbai-based Vastu consultant Isha Sinhal for tips on the proper placement and décor of the kitchen. Here’s what she suggests.

Kitchen Vastu direction: Where should your kitchen be?

Isha Sinhal explains that the Lord of Fire, Agni Dev, prevails in the Southeast direction (Agni Kon) of the home. This makes the Southeast an ideal direction for the kitchen in Vastu Shastra, promoting harmony and prosperity. “If the Southeast isn’t possible in your case, you can get your kitchen constructed in the Northwest,” suggests Isha. But you must avoid other directions, including the North, Northeast, and Southwest, for kitchen placement. This might trigger conflicts at home, ruining family bonds. Now that you know where your kitchen should be according to Vastu, what’s the right spot for your sink, stove, and fridge?

“The Southwest and Northwest are the ideal directions to place the refrigerator,” Isha says. You should avoid keeping it next to the sink or stove for easy movement and a clutter-free space. As the fire element rules the kitchen stove area, you should place the burner in the Southeast direction, according to Isha. She suggests that you should face the East while cooking to promote positive energy and good health. Similarly, Isha explains that the water element governs the sink area in the kitchen. So, you should place it in the North or Northeast. She warns against constructing the sink next to the gas stove as they represent opposite elements. This will lead to disharmony at home. But what if you can’t make these adjustments?

When the kitchen stove and sink are placed next to each other, it leads to a clash between the fire and water elements. If you can’t change the direction, Isha has a simple Vastu remedy to help you. “Place a green mat, copper strip, or a wooden plank between the kitchen stove and sink to neutralise the element clash. You can also place basil leaves, a pyramid, or a plant between them as an energetic buffer,” Isha suggests.

Do you know which countertops and colours are best suited for kitchen décor in Vastu Shastra? Isha Sinhal suggests using steel interiors in moderation to prevent noise and cold surfaces. “You must also avoid using black granite and blue colour in the Southeast kitchen, as they disturb the fire element,” the Vastu consultant says. Isha recommends using colours like orange, peach, off-white, warm beige, light green, and soft yellow. These colours activate the fire element without overpowering it.

Vastu-approved décor for an open kitchen

An open kitchen is the new trend in modern homes. But you’ll need to make a few changes to align them with Vastu. Isha suggests using a partition, breakfast counter, or hanging light to separate the kitchen from the living area energetically. “You must place chimneys and exhaust fans to ensure good ventilation, releasing excess heat and negativity,” she says. Isha also recommends keeping the stove away from the main entrance’s direct view. This will create a smoother energy flow, leading to harmony and financial stability.
