Janmashtami isn’t just about midnight aartisdahi handi celebrations, and soulful bhajans. It’s also about making some of the best sweet dishes to celebrate the festival. Stemming from stories of Lord Krishna’s love for makhan and his mischief, Janmashtami bhog includes dairy products and lots of dry fruits. From makhan mishri to aromatic panjiri and the sacred panchamrit, Janmashtami is incomplete without these dishes. Try these easy prasad recipes for Janmashtami 2025.

1. Dhaniya panjiri recipe

Ingredients:

1/2 cup coriander seeds

1 cup desi ghee

1/2 cup makhana (fox nuts)

1/4 cup chironji (cuddapah almonds)

1/4 cup melon seeds

3 tbsp almonds, chopped

3 tbsp cashews, chopped

2 tbsp raisins, chopped

1/2 cup desiccated coconut

1/2 cup powdered sugar

2-3 basil leaves

Method:

Start by dry roasting the coriander seeds in a saucepan for two minutes. Transfer the roasted seeds to a bowl and let them cool. In the same saucepan, heat three tablespoons of desi ghee on a low flame. Add the makhanas and roast them until crisp. Transfer the roasted makhanas to a bowl and let them cool. Now, heat two tablespoons of desi ghee and add chironji, melon seeds, almonds, and cashews. Roast the ingredients on a low flame until crisp. Transfer the roasted mixture to the makhana bowl. Now, dry roast desiccated coconut on a low flame until golden brown. Transfer it to the bowl containing the roasted dry fruit mixture. Add the chopped raisins and mix the ingredients well.

In a blender, add the roasted coriander seeds and blend them into a coarse powder. Heat four tablespoons of desi ghee in a saucepan and roast the coriander seed powder until brown. Turn off the flame and transfer the roasted powder to the dry fruit bowl. Add the powdered sugar and basil leaves to it. Mix again. The dhaniya panjiri prasad is ready for Janmashtami.

2. Panchamrit recipe

Ingredients:

2 cups cow milk

4 tbsp curd

2 tbsp sugar

2 tbsp honey

1 tbsp almonds, chopped

2 tbsp desi ghee

1 tbsp raisins

1 tbsp cashews, chopped

2 tbsp chironji

1 tbsp melon seeds

1/2 cup makhana

2-3 basil leaves

Method:

In a bowl, add the cow milk and curd. Now, add desi ghee, honey, sugar, chironji, melon seeds, and makhana. Add chopped almonds, cashews, raisins, and basil leaves. Mix the ingredients gently. The panchamrit bhog is ready. This is the easiest prasad recipe for Janmashtami.

3. Makhana paag recipe

Ingredients:

2 cups makhana

6 tbsp desi ghee

2 cups coconut, grated

1 cup water

1 tsp white pepper

2 cups sugar

1 tsp cardamom powder

1 tsp nutmeg, grated

Method:

In a saucepan, heat four tablespoons of desi ghee on a medium flame and add makhanas. Roast them until crisp. Transfer them to a bowl to cool for some time. Now, heat two tablespoons of desi ghee and add grated coconut. Roast it until aromatic, then transfer the mixture to a bowl. Coarsely crush the roasted makhanas using a mortar and pestle. In the same saucepan, add sugar and water. Heat the mixture until the sugar dissolves completely.

Once it reaches a thick sugar syrup consistency, add the roasted coconut and makhanas. Add white pepper, cardamom powder, and grated nutmeg. Mix the ingredients well and keep cooking gently on a low flame. In the meantime, take a thali or a flat-surfaced utensil and grease it with some desi ghee. Now, turn off the flame and transfer the mixture to the flat utensil. Press the paag mixture to make it even and let it solidify at room temperature. After an hour, divide the mixture into small rectangular pieces. The makhana paag is ready to be served.

4. Makhan mishri recipe

Ingredients:

2 cups fresh cow milk malai (clotted cream)

3-4 ice cubes

1/2 cup mishri (rock sugar)

2-3 basil leaves

Method:

In a bowl, take clotted cream of fresh cow milk. Whisk it properly in a clockwise direction until the cream separates from the milk completely. Now, add ice cubes to the bowl and whisk the cream again. Strain the excess milk and transfer the obtained butter to another bowl. Sprinkle some mishri over the makhan and garnish it with basil leaves. Try this easy recipe for makhan mishri this Janmashtami 2025.

5. Mawa kheer recipe

Ingredients:

1 cup fresh cow milk

1/2 cup water

1 tsp saffron

1 cup sugar

1/2 tsp cardamom powder

1 cup unsweetened mawa 

2 tbsp almonds, chopped

2 tbsp cashews, chopped

1 tbsp raisins

Method:

In a saucepan, heat some water on a medium flame and add milk to it. Keep stirring the milk and add saffron to it. Add sugar and cardamom powder, and stir the mixture again on a high flame to bring it to a boil. Add the mawa to the milk and mix the ingredients well. Make sure the mawa is kept at room temperature before using, or it might curdle the milk. Keep stirring the milk to get a thick consistency. Turn off the flame and transfer the kheer to a bowl. Refrigerate the dish for some time. Once cold, add the chopped dry fruits to the kheer and mix the ingredients. Offer the mawa kheer cold for the Janmashtami bhog.
