Grey divorces, though becoming more common today, are still widely judged and often not accepted by society. Marriages that have lasted decades are expected to remain intact no matter what. Director Saurabh Shukla’s Jab Khuli Kitaab takes a refreshing step by addressing this rarely discussed topic. The film explores how complicated long marriages can be and reminds us that matters of the heart are rarely simple. But is the movie as honest and thought-provoking as the premise promises? Read our Jab Khuli Kitaab review to know.
Jab Khuli Kitaab review: A story that takes an unexpected turn

At first, the film appears to be a gentle story about devotion and long-lasting love. Gopal, played by Pankaj Kapur, takes care of his comatose wife Anusuya (Dimple Kapadia) with remarkable dedication. From giving her sponge baths to carefully draping her saree, he looks after her with patience and affection. However, the story quickly moves beyond this emotional setup.
After two years in a coma, Anusuya finally regains consciousness. While the family gathers around her with relief and excitement, she asks to speak to her husband alone. During that conversation, she reveals that she had an extramarital affair with one of Gopal’s colleagues nearly 50 years ago. What starts as a confession soon disrupts the entire family dynamic. The revelation triggers a series of emotional reactions, misunderstandings, and confrontations that form the heart of the film.
A heart-warming story with many layers

Gopal’s response is immediate and firm — he wants a divorce. He does not want to live the rest of his life carrying the knowledge of her betrayal and then eventually become her widower. Anusuya, on the other hand, does not agree with this decision. For her, the confession was about honesty and closure, not the end of a marriage that has lasted decades.
As the couple deal with this conflict, the rest of the family is pulled into the situation unknowingly. Although, Gopal and Anusuya’s kids stay oblivious to this information, it affects their lives. But don’t be mistaken, Jab Khuli Kitaab isn’t a simple family drama; it has many layers that keep surprising you. Right when you think this is how the movie will end, it surprises you.
A wholesome family watch
One of the film’s biggest strengths is its performances. Pankaj Kapur and Dimple Kapadia bring a natural realism to their characters, making their arguments, silences, and emotional moments feel believable. The supporting cast also plays an important role in keeping the film engaging. Aparshakti Khurana, who plays a divorce lawyer, adds humour to the narrative. His scenes provide light moments that balance the heavier themes of the story. With a runtime of nearly two hours, the film manages to touch upon several relatable themes, such as marriage, honesty, forgiveness, and family expectations, without feeling overly complicated.
Saurabh Shukla’s writing and direction are remarkable. The film never loses touch with reality, nor does it ever let the viewers down.
Jab Khuli Kitaab is an engaging film that starts with a simple premise but gradually opens up larger conversations about long-term relationships, realities of marriage, and how tiny moments of anger can lead to life-altering outcomes.
Jab Khuli Kitaab is now streaming on Zee5.
