Jitendra Kumar, Javed Jaffrey, and Arushi Sharma star in this endearing sports dramedy directed by Sameer Saxena. It’s not the kind of Bollywood film you would’ve watched in recent memory. In fact, Jaadugar is different enough to be one of the more memorable films of this year.

Meenu, played by Jitendra Kumar, is a wannabe magician who is forced to be a sportsman in his football-crazy hometown. Jitendra Kumar plays a disgruntled footballer who is tired of playing with the Adarsh Nagar Panthers in the tournaments of Neemuch. Meenu is far more interested in being a magician, inspired by his mentor Master Chhabra.

Javed Jaffrey plays Meenu’s uncle, Pradeep, and his coach in the football team. Pradeep holds himself responsible for the death of his brother and sister-in-law, Meenu’s parents. So, he takes it upon himself to fulfil his brother’s dream of making his son a footballer and the local team winning a coveted trophy.

The film is unexpectedly and refreshingly funny with dramatic parts that pull at your heartstrings. Javed Jaffrey handles the complex emotions of his character superbly and will make you weep without being over the top. Soon after making you cry, he will also make you laugh. Jaadugar captures the spirit of a small town without doing the same thing that has been done so many times in so many films. The actors, including the supporting cast, fit really well into their roles and will make you laugh without being too obvious about it.

Jitendra Kumar is delightfully ditzy as Meenu. And even though this quality makes him lose the “love of his life”, it’s endearing to watch. When he falls in love again, a condition is put before him to excel at football to win the new love of his life. For this, he has to convince his uncle, Pradeep, that he wants to fulfil his father’s last wish and lead his football team to victory.

After a long time, we see creative, beautiful writing in a Bollywood film. The writing is witty and keeps you interested in the movie. Along with the acting, the writers also deserve accolades for their work in making Jaadugar a success.

Watch Jaadugar with your family this weekend for a wholesome experience. Jaadugar is streaming now on Netflix.
