Moms are the first rockstars of our lives, we all know that. And Isha Ambani’s recent tribute for her mom Nita Ambani reminds us of the pivotal roles mothers play in their daughters’ careers.
At Harper Bazaar’s Women of the Year Awards 2024, Isha was awarded the ‘Icon of the Year’, and in her acceptance speech, Isha dedicated the award to her daughter and to her mother. She said, “I’d like to dedicate this award to my daughter Aadiya who inspires me every day to do more and do better. And to my mother who’s been my role model and who’s paved the way for me. I always tell her, ‘Mom, thank you for walking so I could run’, so really, this is because of her.”
This statement speaks volumes for mothers all over the world, doesn’t it?

The powerful mother-daughter duo of Nita and Isha Ambani
You know how daughters are considered papa ki pari, right? This is because dads are always their biggest cheerleaders. As daughters, this makes us fly high, but we also need some grounding on the side. And that’s where mothers come in. They don’t shy away from humbling us, but they also empower us to become independent. Like Isha Ambani, there are several successful women out there whose moms have been the wind beneath their wings.
Here are five stories of prominent women who credit their mothers for their success.
1. Deepika Padukone
Nothing can escape a mother’s eyes, especially if her child is in trouble. And that’s exactly what actor Deepika Padukone revealed in a conversation with NDTV about her battle with depression. She said, “Had my mother and the caregiver not identified my symptoms, in my moment of vulnerability, I don’t know what state I would be in today.” According to Deepika, her mother, Ujjala Padukone, would be beside her during her treatment to ensure she was taking her medicines on time. Deepika Padukone says she could find her way back to her career because her mom helped her throughout the journey.
2. PV Sindhu
Moms are the silent supporters who whistle the loudest at our achievements. PV Sindhu’s successful career in Badminton proves it as she talks about her supermom in an interview with Sportstar. “My mother’s role cannot be quantified and measured. Simply put, if not for her, I couldn’t have had this kind of a career”, Sindhu said.
3. Priyanka Chopra
Daddy’s lil girl aka Priyanka Chopra is known throughout the world now and that’s because she took the risk of moving to Hollywood. Do you know where she gets this confidence and courage from? Priyanka’s mother, Madhu Chopra, is her number one support system. Priyanka Chopra once said that her mother pushed her to be her best self whenever she felt like a failure. Priyanka recalled that at a time when she was dealing with box office failures, her mother helped her in confronting defeat with a smile. In an interview with FilmyGyan, Madhu reveals how Priyanka “was very close to her father…but I was…disha dikhaane wali.”
4. Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw
The chairperson of Biocon shares her story of being parented by a superwoman. Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw talks fondly of her mother Yamini while recalling the source of her bold and free spirit. According to Kiran, her mother is the reason she could tap into the biopharmaceutical industry and make Biocon a global enterprise. She says, “If my father was my driving force in the first half of my life, my mother is definitely my inspiration during the latter part of my life.” Moreover, her mom accompanied her in setting up her firm while she was running her own dry-cleaning business. Kiran reveals how her mother opted to shift her career from that of a homemaker to an entrepreneur at the age of 68. And that’s where Kiran’s dedication and courage came from while leading Biocon.
5. Meghna Gulzar
A brilliant director and daughter to actor Rakhee and poet Gulzar, Meghna shares how her mother has inspired her in life. She says, “My mother has lived her professional and personal life with tremendous dignity and grace. I try to do that every day of my life.” Meghna regards her mom as a “tough critic” but an important one as her mother’s remarks helped her improve her craft.
While dads are always there to cheer and support us, moms become the foundation of our existence. And Isha Ambani summed up this sentiment perfectly in her speech.
