It’s Shoojit Sircar’s world and we all are just living in it. Starring Abhishek Bachchan in the lead role, I Want To Talk delivers a compelling story based on marketing professional Arjun Sen’s life. The movie discusses Shoojit’s favourite themes of life and death, similar to Piku (2015) and October (2018). The movie builds on silence to explore the fractious father-daughter duo and the will of a terminally ill man who has undergone over 20 surgeries. Read this review of I Want To Talk to know more.
Who is Arjun Sen?
The man in question is a marketing genius who lives to talk and even makes a career out of it. Settled in California, Arjun Sen’s urge to talk only increases as he is distanced from his Indian community. His social circle only includes people he meets during his treatment. To make things worse, the stubborn Bengali NRI doesn’t share an easy relationship with god. Arjun goes from being a divorced man, a wannabe cool dad to his daughter, Reya (played by Pearle Dey and Ahilya Bamroo at different ages) to a cancer patient with several other illnesses. For someone who hates the word ‘manipulate’, he is nothing but manipulative. Will he persuade his destiny to give him more than 100 days to live?
Gripping performance by Abhishek Bachchan
I Want To Talk has no background score. Silence becomes the soul of the movie without making the film dull. The movie is a slow simmer, but it is an engaging watch. Abhishek Bachchan gives a stellar performance as a divorced, terminally ill man trying to reconnect with his daughter while Johny Lever lightens the mood with his excellent comic timing. You can also see glimpses of Piku‘s Bashkor Banerjee (Amitabh Bachchan) and Piku (Deepika Padukone) in I Want To Talk‘s Arjun and Reya. Their witty banter and humour balance out the heavy emotions of the film.
Abhishek Bachchan does complete justice to a complicated character like Arjun Sen. Pearle Dey, the little Reya, delivers a spectacular performance with her innocence. Ahilya Bamroo, the teenage Reya and an influencer in reality, makes her acting debut in I Want To Talk.
Written by Ritesh Shah, I Want To Talk casts a mix of Bollywood and Hollywood gems, making it a Hinglish movie. It stars Tom McLaren, Janet Carter, Kristin Goddard, and Indeepa Singh in the supporting roles.
