The HPV vaccine might be one of modern medicine’s best-kept secrets, and that’s a problem. Not because the information isn’t out there, but because it’s drowning in a sea of myths, half-truths, and assumptions that should’ve been retired years ago. Ask most people about it, and they’ll tell you it’s “just for teenagers.” Adults routinely dismiss it, convinced they’ve aged out of eligibility. Meanwhile, safety rumours that have been thoroughly debunked keep making the rounds on social media. Therefore, we asked a fertility coach, Dr Isha, about the uses of the HPV vaccine and who needs it, and her response is quite surprising!

What is the HPV vaccine?

Human Papillomavirus sounds like a single villain, but it’s actually a sprawling family of more than 200 related viruses. The HPV vaccine is a preventive shot designed to fight the high-risk strains within this group, the ones that can lead to cervical cancer, vaginal cancer, anal cancer, and genital warts. Dr Isha, a fertility coach, explains that the vaccine specifically targets these dangerous strains. The vaccine is not just about cancer prevention; the HPV vaccine has many uses, including safeguarding your entire reproductive future.

Should you get vaccinated?

HPV vaccine uses

Traditionally, the HPV vaccine has been associated with adolescents, and for good reason. Girls and boys are ideally vaccinated before any potential exposure to the virus. However, Dr Isha emphasises that protection isn’t just for teenagers: “Women and men up to age 45” should consider vaccination. Here’s where a common misconception needs clearing up. Many sexually active adults assume the vaccine won’t benefit them anymore. Not true. “HPV is not one virus; it’s a family of many strains. Exposure to one type does not protect you from others,” Dr Isha explains. “The vaccine helps prevent new infections and reduces the chance of progressing to cervical abnormalities.”

The fertility connection you haven’t considered

Now, here’s where things get particularly relevant for anyone thinking about starting or expanding their family. The HPV vaccine doesn’t just prevent cancer; it protects fertility in ways that are both direct and profound. When high-risk HPV strains cause cervical abnormalities, treatment becomes necessary. Procedures like LEEP or cone knife conisation can remove problematic tissue, but they can also weaken the cervix or cause complications in future pregnancies. “By preventing high-risk HPV infections, the vaccine reduces the likelihood of those treatments being needed. This is one of the strongest fertility-related advantages,” Dr Isha points out. By avoiding the treatment, you protect your cervix and, ultimately, your ability to carry a healthy pregnancy.

Despite the many uses of the HPV vaccine, it has been the subject of persistent misinformation, particularly around fertility. But scientific evidence shows that the HPV vaccine does not negatively affect fertility in women or men. In fact, “protection against HPV-related infections benefits the couple overall,” Dr Isha notes.

Can you get vaccinated while trying to conceive?

This is one of the most common questions fertility coaches hear, and the answer is reassuring. “The HPV vaccine is considered safe while trying to conceive because it is a non-live vaccine,” Dr Isha explains. Doctors only recommend avoiding vaccination once you’ve confirmed your pregnancy. If you receive a dose without knowing you’re pregnant, there’s no cause for alarm because doctors simply delay subsequent doses until after you’ve delivered. And for those actively trying? “Someone who is trying to conceive can continue trying between doses,” Dr Isha clarifies. You don’t need to press pause on your baby-making plans. That said, completing the vaccination series before conceiving is ideal. This ensures full protection without any interruptions and eliminates any concerns about timing.

Is the HPV vaccine safe during IVF treatment?

For couples pursuing IVF or other assisted reproductive technologies, the vaccine takes on additional significance. “It’s ideal to finish the series before major fertility procedures,” Dr Isha advises. “Protection from HPV can reduce the risk of cervical issues during treatment.” And you don’t need to wait after getting vaccinated before you try to conceive or start IVF.

Is it safe for everyone?

The HPV vaccine has a remarkably wide safety profile. People with PCOS, thyroid issues, diabetes, autoimmune conditions, or those undergoing fertility treatments can safely receive it unless their doctor identifies a unique situation. The only people who should avoid the vaccine are those with a severe allergy to any vaccine component, those who experienced a strong allergic reaction to a previous dose, and pregnant women, for whom vaccination is delayed until after delivery.

HPV vaccine is a must for everyone, no matter your age, gender or whether you’re planning a family.
