With Diwali just around the corner, it’s officially that time of year when homes sparkle, lights glow, and everything feels fresh and festive. But before you bring out the diyas and decorations, there’s one very important task on your pre-Diwali checklist — cleaning your rugs. Dusty, stained, or musty rugs can dull your festive vibe, and honestly, no one wants that when guests are walking in to admire your decor. The good news? You don’t need professional help or fancy machines. A few simple tricks can make your rugs look (and smell) brand new, all in the comfort of your home. Here’s how to easily clean your rugs at home.

1. Know your rug

Before you get into cleaning mode, take a minute to figure out what your rug is made of. Is it wool, cotton, synthetic fibres, or delicate fabrics? Each one needs a slightly different approach. Check the care label if it has one. For delicate or antique rugs, you might want to skip the DIY and call in the pros. But for most everyday rugs, a little care goes a long way.

2. Remove loose dirt and dust

First things first, get rid of the obvious dirt. Shake out smaller rugs outdoors to let all that hidden dust escape. For bigger ones, grab your vacuum cleaner and go over both sides. Move your furniture around if needed, and don’t forget the edges or fringes; that’s where dirt loves to hide. Use a vacuum with a brush attachment to lift embedded dust without pulling at the fibres.

3. Spot-clean stains right away

If you spot a stain, act fast! The longer it sits, the harder it gets to remove. Blot the area with a clean cloth or paper towel, but never rub (that just spreads it around). Here’s a quick fix for different types of stains:

  • Food or drink spills: Mix a little warm water with mild dish soap and dab gently.
  • Pet stains: Combine equal parts water and white vinegar, blot, and then rinse with clean water.
  • Grease: Sprinkle baking soda or cornstarch. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then vacuum and spot-clean.

4. Deep clean your rug

Once you’ve taken care of the stains, it’s time for a deeper clean. Here’s how to deep clean a rug at home:

1. Soap and water (best for durable rugs)

  • Mix mild detergent with warm water.
  • Test a small hidden area to make sure the colours don’t bleed.
  • Gently scrub the rug in sections using a soft brush or cloth.
  • Rinse with clean water and blot with a towel.

2. Baking soda refresh (for a quick fix)

  • Sprinkle baking soda generously across the rug.
  • Let it sit for 15-30 minutes (overnight if it’s extra musty).
  • Vacuum it all up and enjoy a fresh scent instantly.

3. Steam cleaning (optional but effective)

If you have a steam cleaner, it’s perfect for removing deep-seated dirt and allergens. Just follow the instructions carefully and make sure the rug dries completely afterwards.

5. Dry it the right way

A damp rug is a big no-no. It can quickly turn musty or even develop mould. After washing, hang smaller rugs on a railing or clothesline. For larger ones, lay them flat in a well-ventilated space. Avoid direct sunlight if your rug has delicate fabric, as the colours could fade. Flip it over halfway through to help both sides dry evenly.

6. Keep it clean

Now that your rug looks brand new, here’s how to keep it that way:

  • Vacuum once a week (especially in high-traffic areas).
  • Rotate your rug every few months to even out wear and tear.
  • Use rug pads as they help keep dust away and protect your flooring.
  • Deal with stains the moment they happen. Don’t wait for them to become permanent guests!

A clean rug or carpet instantly makes your space look brighter, cosier, and Diwali-ready. So, put on your favourite playlist, roll up your sleeves, and give your rugs a little love before the festivities begin.
