Diwali is just around the corner, which means it’s time to bring out the festive outfits, light up your home, and of course, get that glow going. But if a salon facial or professional treatment isn’t possible right now, here’s your perfect backup plan. We spoke to dermatologist Dr Thalha, who shared a few safe, dermatologist-approved homemade face masks for glowing skin that you can whip up in your kitchen. They’re gentle, effective, and perfect for that pre-Diwali radiance for all skin types.
1. Oatmeal and yoghurt mask

This combo is mild and non-irritating which is why it works for sensitive skin. Oatmeal reduces inflammation and restores moisture, while yoghurt’s natural acids brighten without over-exfoliating. Both ingredients have Dr Thalha’s stamp of approval for their gentleness.
How to make it:
- 2 tablespoons of ground oatmeal
- 1 tablespoon of plain yoghurt
Mix them into a smooth paste and apply it evenly on clean skin. Let it sit on your face for about 10–15 minutes. Rinse off with lukewarm water.
2. Honey and aloe vera mask
“This one’s a hydration booster,” says Dr Thalha. Honey draws moisture into your skin and has mild antibacterial properties, while aloe vera soothes irritation and refreshes tired skin, leaving you dewy and smooth.
How to make it:
- 1 tablespoon of pure aloe vera gel
- 1 teaspoon of raw honey
Blend and apply a thin layer to your face. Relax for 15–20 minutes, then rinse off with cool water.
3. Cucumber and yoghurt mask

If your skin’s feeling overheated or sun-exposed, this one’s for you. Cucumber cools and reduces puffiness, while yoghurt restores hydration and gently exfoliates.
How to make it:
- Half a cucumber (blended into a puree)
- 1 tablespoon of plain yoghurt
Mix and apply evenly to your face for 10–15 minutes before rinsing off with cold water.
4. Green tea and rice flour mask
Antioxidant-rich green tea tackles dullness and pollution damage, while rice flour provides gentle exfoliation. Together, they brighten and smoothen your skin without stripping away natural oils.
How to make it:
- 1 tablespoon of rice flour
- 1 tablespoon of cooled green tea (freshly brewed)
Mix into a paste and apply evenly. Leave for 15 minutes, then rinse off using gentle circular motions.
5. Gram flour and turmeric mask

A timeless Indian favourite, this mask combines besan to cleanse and control oil with turmeric to brighten and even out skin tone. They cleanse without over-drying and leave a natural glow. This is one of the safest homemade face masks for glowing skin.
How to make it:
- 1 tablespoon of gram flour (besan)
- A pinch of turmeric
- Enough rose water or milk to make a paste
Apply evenly and leave for 10-12 minutes. Rinse off gently before it fully dries.
This Diwali, skip the salon stress and give your skin a little TLC at home with these dermatologist-approved DIY masks. They’re safe, soothing, and guaranteed to leave you glowing, just in time for the festive lights.
Note: Dr Thalha recommends using these only once or twice a month, and if they dry out or irritate the skin, stop immediately.
