Gulshan Devaiah has been wowing the audience with his artistry and talent for over a decade. He is one of the finest performers to come out of Bollywood and an actor who plays characters that stay with you for a long time. From an unconventional debut in Anurag Kashyap’s That Girl in Yellow Boots to featuring in strong stories like Hunterrr, Ram-Leela, A Death in the Gunj, and recently, the Amazon Prime Original show Dahaad, Gulshan is an actor who continues to surprise us. In the latest episode of AfterHours with All About Eve, Gulshan Devaiah got candid with host Bani G. Anand and spilt some serious Bollywood tea.

‘My publicists don’t call the paps on me’

If you thought paparazzi were just waiting around airports and gyms to click your favourite celebrities, Gulshan Devaiah is here to burst your bubble. The actor, who is rarely ever spotted in paparazzi shots, said, “My publicists don’t phone them and say that I’m taking a flight…It’s not like they’re waiting outside or something like that.” In a rare instance when Gulshan was papped, it was right after his divorce as he and his ex-wife were out for a meal together.

Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh are one of the power couples of Bollywood. Their relationship is #goals for a lot of young couples out there. It’s no secret that sparks flew as the couple worked together in the Sanjay Leela Bhansali movie, Ram-Leela. Gulshan was a witness to the growing romance of the couple and happily shared that while Ranveer did seem smitten with the gorgeous Deepika, her affection towards Ranveer took him by surprise.

Devaiah also spoke about the legendary tyranny of Sanjay Leela Bhansali on sets. Gulshan said, “He gets angry, he throws things around, he breaks stuff like iPads and phones and laptops and microphones and all that. And he screams at people and let’s just say that he is good at swearing.” But the actor also spoke about SLB’s other, gentler side. “He is a lot of fun also. He jokes, he pulls legs, he cracks jokes, he is more approachable than people think he is. I used to go and chat with him and he also allows you to improvise and bring your own creativity into it to some degree.”

‘Ranveer’s prep for a role is suffering’

Often, when actors play certain characters, they tend to embody the role in real life as well. While Ranveer Singh is known for his method acting, Gulshan Devaiah “rides the line” between the real and the reel, but never crosses over. Devaiah shares how he is able to detach from his characters by not being those characters, or bringing their characteristics into his real life. He has a clear demarcation for the actor he is and the character he is playing.

Gulshan also shared how he believes Ranveer Singh’s process, though it works for the actor, is more suffering than fun.
