Like most of us, you probably believe that every Hindu wedding involves the bride and groom taking seven pheras (circles) around the sacred fire. It’s a beautiful visual, often shown as the most sacred and emotional moment of the ceremony. But are there really seven pheras in traditional Hindu wedding rituals?

“There are no seven pheras

four pheras in hindu marriage

On being asked about the significance of seven pheras in Hindu marriages, Pandit Acharya Vidya Prasad Mishra said something that quite shocked us. He said, “The truth is, there are no seven pheras. Those who get it done are going completely opposite of the tradition. But it has been made popular.” He further explained to us what actually is the ceremony of pheras, “The correct term is Saptapadi (seven steps). The ‘phere’ around the sacred fire should be done only four times signifying the four purposes of life. To achieve those purposes, we have accepted each other as companions.”

Once the couple completes the four pheras, they proceed to Saptapadi, which means “seven steps.” These steps symbolise seven vows taken by the couple, ensuring a strong and harmonious marriage. Pandit Acharya Vidya Prasad Mishra also told us, “According to the Hindu Marriage Act, a marriage is not considered complete until the Saptapadi is performed.”

When Bani asked Pandit Acharya Vidya Prasad Mishra what each step means, he explained, “Seven steps were chosen to signify completeness. Let’s walk these steps together, solidifying our bond.” He further explained that each of the seven steps represents a fundamental aspect of marriage.

Step one – Health and well-being

The couple prays for good health and a balanced life and vows to support each other in maintaining physical and mental wellness.

Step two – Strength and power

This step symbolises inner strength and resilience. The couple promises to stand by each other in tough times and maintain happiness in their home.

Step three – Managing finances by righteous means

Managing money is crucial in any relationship. This step involves earning wealth through righteous means and spending it wisely. It also emphasises sharing a part of one’s wealth for the greater good.

Step four – Knowledge and happiness

Trust and learning go hand in hand in a successful marriage. This step focuses on seeking knowledge, nurturing wisdom, and ensuring harmony in life.

Step five – Family and progeny

Traditionally, this step is about raising a family, but it also represents shared responsibilities in life. The couple vows to build a strong foundation for future generations.

Step six – Time and seasons

Time waits for no one. This step reminds the couple to value time, respect life’s rhythms, and never waste precious moments. It’s a vow to use time wisely and productively.

Step seven – Friendship and loyalty

A marriage should be built on trust and friendship. This final step cements the bond, ensuring that their companionship remains unbreakable. The couple pledges to be lifelong friends, supporting each other through all of life’s challenges.

“Post this, marriage is solidified,” Pandit Acharya Vidya Prasad Mishra said. “A new journey begins, and one must never forget: to accept a partner means embracing their strengths and flaws. Much like how a bird needs both wings to fly, a marriage requires both partners to work together in harmony.”
