After Dobaaraa, Taapsee Pannu is back with another thriller, Blurr. Also starring Gulshan Devaiah and Krutika Desai Khan, Blurr is directed by Ajay Bahl and is a remake of the Spanish film Los ojos de Julia. From the very first frame, Blurr builds up the tension and keeps the viewer hooked with a gruesome murder to start the story.

Gayatri and Gautami, both portrayed by Taapsee Pannu, are twin sisters who haven’t spoken to each other in about half a year. While Gayatri is married to Neil (Devaiah), Gautami lives alone near Nainital. Soon, it is revealed that Gautami was blind owing to a degenerative disorder that plagues both sisters. When Gautami is found dead in her house, the cops conclude that it is suicide but Gayatri is convinced otherwise. When she gets no help from the cops, Gayatri starts tracking the last few months of her sister’s life to find out who killed her. But in the process of trying to find her sister’s alleged murderer, Gayatri begins to lose her sight as well. When she tries to tell her husband of her suspicions, he dismisses her as does everyone else. However, it is obvious that a sinister secret linked to her sister’s death is being kept from Gayatri.

Blurr does a good job of keeping the viewer guessing with both predictable and unpredictable twists. The eerie visual setting of the film, in the hills of Uttarakhand, adds to the thrill of the story. The director has also made generous use of camera tricks that attempt to keep the viewer as clueless as the protagonist. However, this tactic makes the film a bit predictable as you begin to understand what’s being kept hidden. While Blurr maintains a tight pace throughout, the climax feels rushed. The use of flash photography though keeps the viewer engaged despite a flat end to the story.

This is not one of Taapsee Pannu’s best performances by far. In fact, her character seems like Taapsee from every other film instead of being specific to this story. Whether it’s a lack of variety in her films or a limitation of her talent, Taapsee Pannu is heading towards boring the audience with the monotony of her characters.

Gulshan Devaiah plays his character well but doesn’t take up much space in the story. However, Krutika Desai Khan surprises the viewer with her sharp performance, especially in the climax. As the film is ending, you tend to think you haven’t seen enough of her and that the actor has been sidelined. But as the climax comes around, she’s waiting there with a surprise.

Blurr runs for just a little more than two hours and that feels apt for the story. Watch the film this weekend if you enjoy eerie thrillers. Just be prepared to feel a tiny bit let down by how it ends. Blurr is streaming now on Zee5.
