Set in the city of Banaras, the film starts with Ranjan (Rajkummar Rao) and Titli (Wamiqa Gabbi) eloping from their house to get married, but they are caught by the police. After much hesitation, Titli’s father decides that the only way Ranjan can marry her is by getting a sarkari naukri within two months. And so starts the race… From Mahadev to Bhagwan Das, Ranjan leaves no stone unturned to become a sarkari babu, and eventually, it pays off. He gets the job, and the wedding is fixed for May 30. Haldi preparations are in full swing, but just then, luck delivers a wicked move. Ranjan wakes up over and over again on the day of his haldi ki rasam. Ranjan tries everything to exit this time loop, including a failed attempt at suicide. Will Ranjan ever get out of this time loop and reach his mandap?

A time loop comedy with a message

The story of the movie offers you both laugh-out-loud and teary-eyed moments. The first half of the movie is rather slow as Ranjan is stuck in a time loop and the same scenes are repeated over and over again. We wish the makers had gotten to the point a little quicker and spared us the unnecessary songs that add zero meaning to the movie and are also a little annoying. However, the second half of the movie is the real deal. The story takes a turn no one sees coming. It offers jokes that are actually funny and also holds a mirror to society. Bhool Chuk Maaf not only taunts our evergreen obsession with sarkari naukri but also addresses how apathetic and self-centred society has become.

Rajkummar Rao is as impressive as always. He portrays Ranjan’s frustration with humour quite effortlessly, but this isn’t a new or challenging role for him at all. Wamiqa Gabbi’s character, Titli, is a brave and bold girl, and the actor does justice to her role. Other acting heavyweights like Seema Pahwa, Sanjay Mishra, Raghubir Yadav, and Zakir Hussain light up the screen. Overall, Bhool Chuk Maaf is a heartwarming watch that delivers a social message wrapped in laughter. If you are looking to enjoy a chill weekend alone or with your family, Bhool Chuk Maaf can be a good pick.

Can you watch Bhool Chuk Maaf with your family? Yes, there are no intimate scenes or use of abusive language.
