It’s been 20 years since Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s masterpiece Devdas made a grand entry into cinema and our hearts. His magnum opus brought a kind of grandiosity and extravagance that is breathtaking even two decades later. 1. The maroon lehenga
One of the most stunning outfits from Devdas was this gorgeous maroon lehenga that Madhuri Dixit wore for ‘Kaahe Chhed Mohe‘. This outfit weighed about 30 kgs according to designers Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla. It was made using real gold and jadau work and Madhuri wore it with heavy jewellery, including kadas, to complete her look for the song. Truly iconic!
2. The blue saree
Aishwarya Rai played the role of the gorgeous Paro whose fashion was every bit as royal and feminine as it could get. Her sarees and attire go all the way up the fashion scale as she turns into the regal bahurani of the Choudhry family. This particular blue saree with intricate gold work and layered jewellery captures the evolution of her character perfectly.
3. White chikankari kurta set
One of the best outfits from Devdas was this elegant white chikankari kurta set on the charming SRK who played the titular role of Devdas. This outfit was paired with an angavastra (men’s shawl) and churidar to give him a more vintage and traditional look.
4. Green anarkali suit
Who can forget about the stunning green anarkali suit from ‘Maar Daala‘? Madhuri Dixit has some of the most exquisite outfits throughout the film including this one. It is one of the heaviest pieces, paired with equally stunning jewellery to finish her look.
5. The red and white sarees
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s costume team did a fabulous job by bringing the typical Bengali sarees to Dola Re. And even now, the song and the red and white sarees are considered a peak fashion moment in Hindi cinema. Both Madhuri and Aishwarya wore matching sarees with full body and hair jewellery.
6. SRK’s green vintage look
When Shah Rukh Khan returns from London in the film, his outfits have that vintage modern look associated with the English elite. Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla bought pieces of clothing from old shops in London to make his style as authentic as possible. ‘Silsila ye chaahat ka’ is a song that we still hum because of its melodious tune and background music.
