A Supreme Court judge recently stated that all stray dogs should be taken off the streets after a rise in dog bites and rabies cases, and the statement has sparked major outrage. While many are protesting and fighting for the voiceless innocents, some officials support the move and term it as ‘relief’ from stray accidents. “Round up all stray dogs from all localities… whether sterilised or unsterilised,” Justice JB Pardiwala declared. The court has given instructions to capture street dogs, vaccinate and sterilise them, and relocate them to shelter homes within eight weeks. With a population of over one million street dogs, the shelter homes are already overflowing. This can be fatal for street dogs, and now is the time to act with empathy. Here are the benefits of adopting an indie and giving them a loving, supportive home. Save their life and change yours too.

1. You’re not just adopting one; you’re saving their life
With the recent ruling, street dogs are likely to be stuffed in small shelter homes, starve, fall sick, and eventually face a slow, painful death. So, adopting an indie dog is not just about providing them a home; it is about saving their life and giving them a second chance.
2. Indies are street smart and resilient
The Indian Pariah dog, aka our cute indies, is one of the world’s oldest and most primitive breeds. They have naturally evolved and adapted to climates, surviving without human intervention. Now, doesn’t that make them the OG baddies? Indies are street smart, quite literally, and way more resilient than many purebred dogs. This makes them less prone to diseases, and they are the best breeds to travel with anywhere in the world.
3. It’s a slap in the face of pet abandonment culture
A lot of strays are just abandoned pets who were taken from the streets, shown love and care, and then dumped back. So, adopting an indie isn’t just a gesture of empathy and compassion; it is also a slap in the face of the abandonment culture that leaves these fur babies distressed. It is a mindful move and shows how they deserve our love just like any other expensive, imported breed.
4. They are super low-maintenance and independent
One of the biggest benefits of adopting an indie is how low-maintenance they are. Unlike many other breeds, they don’t need controlled environments, extensive grooming, and fancy foods to survive. They are an independent breed that loves their daily walks and a good dose of belly rubs.
5. They adapt to Indian homes quickly
Indies are super adaptable and make for great pets for Indian homes. With a minimal fur coat, a healthy diet, and an active lifestyle, they are fuss-free and super easy to look after. They are quick to train and friendly with babies and other pets, making them the perfect fur companion to have at home.
6. It’s a budget-conscious choice
Another great benefit of adopting an indie is that it is a budget-conscious choice. With fancy breeds come pricey vet visits, special food requirements, constant grooming, and a certain environment to give them a comfortable life. But with indies, it’s super chill. They can thrive on your basic Indian meals and don’t require a lot of vaccinations, and they can survive in almost any climate.
