If you’re not living under a rock, you know why everything has been so bright, pink, and lively all over the internet. Yes, the makers and marketing team of Barbie have done a tremendous job and have made everyone talk about it over the past few weeks. From children to adults, everyone is raving about Greta Gerwig’s live-action film featuring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in the main leads.
Greta Gerwig’s Barbie brings live Barbie dolls to the screen to show us that they are much more than plastic dolls. Barbie can be anything and everyone can be a Barbie. The movie has some amazing Barbies and Kens who’ve done a remarkable job bringing the dream Barbieland to life. This includes America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Ncuti Gatwa, Simu Liu, Michael Cera, Ariana Greenblatt, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, Emma Mackey, and Will Ferrell amongst others. And how can we not mention the stunning stereotypical Barbie, Margot Robbie herself? She plays such a beautifully written character that it’s changed our whole perception of Barbie. Here’s why Greta’s Barbie(s) should run the world.
1. Barbie has her own career, house, car, and money
‘She’s Barbie but he’s just Ken’ holds true from the very beginning of the movie. She is not a damsel in distress who needs saving. In fact, she is powerful and has a career, her own house, and money. And she doesn’t need validation from Ken to be her best boss bitch self. The most stunning outfits and an agenda to empower women, and men too, motivate Barbie every day.
2. Barbie(s) give us hope in a world dominated by testosterone-pumped Kens
Everything is perfect in Barbieland which is run by the Barbies and everyone lives happily and in harmony. So, clearly, the Barbies are doing a great job of keeping things flourishing. And as soon as Ken takes over, there’s chaos, reinstatement of misunderstood patriarchy, and a whole lot of sleaziness. But then the Barbies hatch a plan and save the world by making the Kens of the world feel like the women in the actual world–robbed of power and a voice. Excellent planning skills for the win!
3. They help each other realise that they are enough and don’t need constant Kensplaining
When Ken takes over Barbie’s dream world, he gets all the Barbies running errands and being bimbo dolls who exist just to serve the Kens. Basically, Ken acts like an actual man and everything falls out of order. That is, till the stereotypical Barbie (Margot) makes the other Barbies realise that they are smart, pretty, funny, intelligent, and don’t exist to serve cold beers to men and be their arm candy.
4. There’s never a dull day for the dolls of Barbieland and there’s always a dance party
The best part about Barbieland is the hair blowout parties and choreographed dances every single night. There’s never a dull moment in their bright, pink land and everyone rejoices in being there. I mean, isn’t that what we need? Someone who can make everyone live their lives like a never-ending party?
5. Barbies are witty, smart, and know how to stroke the male ego and get work done
In a specifically Ken-dominated world, Barbies know that they can’t let anyone destroy the pristine pink land. And instead of being an absolute rebel, they use the weapons at their disposal. The charming smile, sugar-coated words, and a little quality time with Kens get them what they want, and that is a sign of pure genius. Won the world without even going to war.
6. The Barbies are never trying to outshine each other
We can see a whole lot of ‘real Barbies fix each other’s hair ribbons’ in this movie which is typical of what real women do, unlike men, who need just a little threat to their male ego to start a war. And don’t we all need somebody who can uplift, empower, and fix everything that is wrong in the world? A whole lot of pink with it is just the cherry on top.
7. Barbie never dumbs herself down to please others
She knows she’s a Barbie and what she is worth. She knows what she deserves and never fails to go for it. And she never dumbs herself down to please others because she knows she is smart. She makes even Ken realise that he is not just Ken, he is Kenough.
So if you haven’t watched the Barbie movie yet, what are you waiting for? Christmas? It is an absolute delight and makes for such a fun watch without coming off as preachy and leaves you gasping for air with its hilarious writing. Barbie is now in cinemas near you.
Can you watch it with your family?: If a little satire and feminism don’t offend anyone, then yes.
