As the name suggests, Baramulla is set in the scenic yet tense city of Baramulla, Kashmir. The story begins with the strange disappearance of a young boy during a magic show — the first of many similar cases. DSP Ridwaan Sayyed (Manav Kaul) is brought in to investigate and soon realises there is something sinister at play; the children seem to vanish into thin air, leaving behind only their scissor-cut hair.

There are no ransom calls or clues, and it quickly becomes clear that money isn’t the motive. As Ridwaan digs deeper, things take a darker turn when his own daughter goes missing. That’s when he discovers a disturbing truth that the children are being kidnapped to be trained as militants. But just as he begins to understand the case, strange supernatural events start to take over his home, blurring the line between what’s real and what’s not.

What we loved about Baramulla

Baramulla isn’t just another supernatural thriller. It’s an emotional and thought-provoking film. It mixes Kashmir’s political tension with elements of horror in a way that keeps you hooked and uneasy at the same time. The movie also pays a heartfelt tribute to the Kashmiri Pandits, showing the pain of the 1990s exodus.

The visuals and background music stand out and make the film truly come alive. The sound design adds to the spooky, tense atmosphere, keeping you on edge throughout. The first half especially keeps you guessing, pulling you into a world that feels both real and mysterious.

Manav Kaul gives a strong and believable performance as a father torn between his duty and his emotions. The supporting cast, including the child actors, do a great job too. Their performances feel natural and honest. The movie also touches upon the strained relationship of a father and daughter and how it mends over the course of the film.

What we didn’t love about Baramulla

While Baramulla delivers a strong story and emotional depth, it does slow down at times. Some scenes feel longer than necessary, which reduces the tension a bit. The second half, though still interesting, becomes a little predictable once the main mystery is revealed. With a tighter edit, the film could have felt sharper and more engaging.

However, overall the story is unique, and executed well by the director and the actors. So, if you’re looking for a gripping watch this weekend, you can absolutely add Baramulla to your watchlist.

Can you watch Baramulla with family?: The movie includes a couple of cuss words in just one scene. If you can ignore that, go ahead!
