Imagine being served a special thali overloaded with all your favourite food items with equally balanced spices. Do you savour it till the end or give up halfway? Depends on your mood and appetite, right? That’s exactly how Atlee’s movie, Baby John feels. A remake of Atlee’s own Tamil movie, Theri (2016), Baby John stars Varun Dhawan as IPS Satya Verma aka John D’Silva aka Baby John in the lead. Is this movie worth the hype? Read our review of Baby John to know if it’s a good watch.
Who is Satya Verma?
The movie taps into the life of IPS Satya Verma, a messiah for good people and the worst nightmare for demons especially if they don’t respect women. This macho character is also a caring and fun father to Khushi (Zara Zyanna) and would crush the world under his feet if anyone hurt her. Yes, even if you splash water on her. Satya is invincible and so is the mastermind, Nanaji (Jackie Shroff), who runs a heinous business of human trafficking of innocent girls. To stop the crime, Satya clashes with the babbar sher aka Nanaji, who uses corruption to continue his business. Having left his former profession in the IPS, Satya now lives under the assumed identity of Baby John to protect his daughter. Will Nanaji find him to take his long-awaited revenge?
Does the story live up to expectations?
The movie starts with a bang, but becomes dull at times, making you question if it’s even worth sitting till the end. And just when you think of giving up on it, Baby John picks itself up to reignite your hope. This film delivers a brilliant cinematic experience. However, it also comes off as the glorification of misery at certain points. It enhances the action, humour, and suspense to a level that it sacrifices the most important issue it began with – the increasing number of rape cases in India.
The movie is a decent Bollywood version of the South masala genre. The action-packed scenes, great background score, and well-timed comedy won’t disappoint you. Jackie Shroff as an antagonist with an intense look is worth every minute. Rajpal Yadav’s craft shines through in the character of Ram Sevak. Wamiqa Gabbi (Tara) was a treat to the eyes and deserved more screentime. Zara Zyanna, who plays Khushi, is the cutest part of the movie. And finally, Salman Khan aka Bhai Jaan, ends the movie on a spectacular note. His cameo is worth the wait.
IPS Satya Verma, good vibes only
Baby John is one of those movies in which Varun Dhawan aced his character. The lungi-wearing Satya delivers a powerhouse performance with his comic timing and action. Sometimes, he even compensates for the overstretched, boring scenes. His presence will give you all the good vibes you need during the year-end. Varun and Zara’s on-screen father-daughter duo offers a great balance of fun and emotions making Baby John an interesting watch.
The movie casts Keerthy Suresh, Sanya Malhotra, Sheeba Chaddha, and Benedict Garrett among other notable actors.
Baby John is now in cinemas.
Can you watch Baby John with your family?: Absolutely. The movie doesn’t contain any sexual content or obscene language.
