Remember Indian Matchmaking on Netflix? At a time when the world was still coming to terms with words like ‘lockdown’ and ‘Covid’, Sima Mami from Mumbai and her antics provided some much-needed distraction. As we started watching, we all picked the people we loved and hated, but there was no one more polarising than Aparna Shewakramani.

US-based lawyer Aparna quickly earned the reputation of being “difficult” and “unlikeable” in the show. And that was only because, unlike many of her peers, she had a clear, defined idea of what she wanted in a partner and how she wanted to live her life, with or without a significant other. This was not easy to watch for people who aren’t used to seeing women with high standards and not succumbing to the pressure of arranged marriage and a life of compromise.
All of us had a lot of questions for Aparna when the show ended, especially since there were rumours that she was unhappy with her portrayal on Indian Matchmaking. In an interview with All About Eve, Aparna said, “I didn’t resonate with the Aparna I saw on Indian Matchmaking. I couldn’t understand who that woman was. Imagine seeing a person that looks just like you, in the clothes that you picked out, in the home that you live in but not understanding who that person is. It was the most disconnected I could ever be from myself.”
We spoke to the reality TV star and author about her brand new book titled ‘She’s Unlikeable’ and the defining aspects of her life, including her mother’s bravery in walking away from a bad marriage. Also, she could be in the next season of Indian Matchmaking!
