Adhura on Amazon Prime Video is the latest addition to the thriller and gore genre. And if you’re someone who enjoys a good horror series, you’re really gonna like this one. Starring Rasika Dugal and Ishwak Singh as the main leads, Adhura is a bone-chilling and disturbing story set in an elite, boys’ boarding school in Ooty. The tall trees and gloomy weather set the tone of the show from the beginning. But there’s a lot more that happens at the hostel after the lights go off. Read our review of Adhura to find out.

A reunion after 15 years

Nilgiri Valley School is an elite and prestigious boys’ school and hostel in the city of Ooty. The story starts with the eerie and unexplained death of the dean and ex-coach of the school, Dean Vyas. It is soon dismissed as a heart attack, but Mr Chandra Prakash (Jaimini Pathak), a teacher in the school, saw something unexplainable and terrifying happening to him. But nobody believes or pays heed to him. Soon after, the only priority of the current dean and staff is to host the reunion of the batch of 2007.

One of the luckiest and oldest batches of the school, it has a bunch of VVIPs who are returning to the school for the reunion. This includes a particular group that was the It group of the batch–the coach’s son and current trustee, Dev (Rijul Ray), his wife, and the only girl in the batch, Malvika Seth (Zoa Morani), a professor and ex-guard of honour, Adhiraj (Ishwak Singh), and their whole group. But Adhiraj’s best friend Ninad (Poojan Chhabra) has been a no-show since the last day of school and still doesn’t show up at the reunion. He was the most bullied kid of the batch and nobody except Adhiraj was friends with him. But as soon as the group sets foot in the school, strange things start happening. Is it all because of what happened 15 years ago?

Unexplained occurrences from Day 1

Vedant, an NRI kid, is shy and is a target of bullies all the time. But one night, he is locked in one of the lockers till someone comes and rescues him, nobody knows who. Soon after, Vedant is seen doing unexplainable things that make you question what’s so dark about him. From killing a bunch of puppies ruthlessly to threatening his classmates who believe Vedant isn’t himself, things start picking up pace. Vedant’s teacher, Ms. Ghosh (Rasika Dugal), is willing to help him and goes out of her way to keep him safe. But as soon as Adhiraj and the gang show up at the school, Vedant becomes more and more evil. It is almost as if he is possessed by someone who knows the truth about what happened on the last day of school 15 years ago.

Storyline and cast

Adhura is a gripping psychological thriller that captivates you and keeps you on the edge. The slow build-up of the plot, with eerieness setting in and evil taking over, will give you the scares. Ishwak Singh, as Adhiraj, and Rasika Dugal, as Ms Ghosh, do a commendable job of keeping the story tight and not making it too predictable. Shrenik Arora, as Vedant, the kid with a sinful look, gives you the chills with his performance. Along with that, the supporting cast including Poojan Chhabra, Rahul Dev, Priya Banerjee, Zoa Morani, K.C. Shankar, Jaimini Pathak, Rijul Ray, and Sahil Salathia did a great job as well.

Can you watch it with your family?: If you’re a bunch of horror fanatics, you can binge-watch this one, but proceed with caution since it can get quite scary.
