Disney+ Hotstar just dropped their first-ever Malayalam web series, and it served. A police procedural directed by Ahammed Khabeer, starring Aju Varghese and Lal in the lead, manages to keep you hooked. Kerala Crime Files: Shiju, Parayil Veedu, Neendakara consists of six episodes, and each episode manages to up the suspense level. Here’s our review of this crime thriller.

Much unlike the regular police procedurals

Kerala Crime Files: Shiju, Parayil Veedu, Neendakara is not like the regular police procedurals you have seen before. You won’t see any high-octane car chases or running after criminals with guns drawn by the cops. Instead, this web series though high on the suspense is also low on the theatrics. And that works very well for it.

The series starts in a lodge where a sex worker is murdered. CI Kurian (Lal) and SI Manoj (Aju Varghese) get on the case along with their team. The series spans over six days, and the only clue the cops have is a name and a fake address – Shiju, Parayil Veedu, Neendakara. With the cops trying to find Shiju, they meet dead end after dead end. Because it is a sex worker who was murdered, there is neither any media coverage nor any pressure from the superiors. Yet, the team led by SI Manoj works day and night to catch the culprit.

With every episode, the anticipation builds, and you are intrigued by the mystery of Shiju and his fake address. You are as invested in the unravelling of the case as the cops who are investigating it. There are a few light-hearted moments in the series that give you a much-needed respite in an otherwise tense set-up. The backstories of the characters are also explored in the series, giving more depth to them.

Kerala Crime Files: Shiju, Parayil Veedu, Neendakara is a well-directed, brilliantly performed and well-made show. For fans of crime thrillers and police procedurals, this will be a great watch.

Kerala Crime Files: Shiju, Parayil Veedu, Neendakara is streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.

Can you watch Kerala Crime Files: Shiju, Parayil Veedu, Neendakara with your family?: Of course, there is no nudity or violence in the series.
