Who doesn’t love sitting on the balcony on a rainy evening and sipping on hot chai? While it might cheer you up, the dampness in the air is not something your house loves. Leaks, drainage problems, or your favourite cabinets getting spoiled can give you sleepless nights. The rain can play havoc with our lives in so many ways, so we need to be prepared. And so does your house. Here are some super useful tips and hacks to make sure your home stays insect-free, odour-free, leak-proof, and happy throughout the rainy season.

1. Roll away the heavy carpets

Monsoons are really not the time to keep those luxurious, heavy carpets on your floor as they can be damaged easily. Once the carpets get even a hint of dampness, it is going to be a nightmare to dry them out. Also, they become the perfect place for fungi to grow which can be harmful for you and your home. So, roll away those heavy carpets and switch to lighter material. Colourful cotton dhurries and bamboo mats are the perfect alternatives to heavy carpets.

2. Bring out lighter drapes

It is time to change those dark drapes that served you well in summer and kept the light out. Now, you need to switch to lighter fabrics that bring some light in, so your home doesn’t look too dark and gloomy. Using cotton or organza drapes will give a light and refreshing look to your place. Also, they are easier to wash and dry in this season.

3. Check for leaks

You really don’t want your walls to be ruined and your home to smell damp due to the rain. So, it is best to check for any gaps or cracks in the window frames or your walls. Make sure that all such gaps are sealed beforehand. This way, you can keep your home safe and smelling fresh even in the heavy downpour.

4. Leave the windows open

Unless it is pouring heavily, try keeping your windows and doors open. Monsoons can trap the moist and damp smell in the house, so it becomes important to ventilate properly. Don’t keep your windows shut all day because you spend most of your time indoors. Circulation of light and air will help get rid of any odour.

5. Check your wiring

It’s not only your walls and ceilings that can be affected by the dampness and moisture in this weather. Any unattended or open wires and circuits are prone to dampness too. So, if you don’t want any short circuits and electric shocks happening, get them fixed right away.

6. Skip the daily pocha

While keeping your home clean is important, keeping it dry is also equally important. Instead of mopping every day, switch to mopping your floors on alternate days. Also, add some anti-bacterial solution when mopping to keep the insects away.

7. Relocate your indoor garden

Monsoon can be tough on your indoor garden and it can become quite a mess. Therefore, it is important to shift them to your balcony. Doing so will ensure that your home is not full of humidity and insects. And take extra care of your plants because not all plants can stand too much rain. Keep checking them regularly and changing their placement.

8. Add scented products

No matter how much you love the smell of wet sand, it is impossible to stand the damp smell and humidity indoors. In order to prevent the monsoon from dampening your mood too, add some scented products to your decor. Oil diffusers, air purifiers, dehumidifiers, and other products, will leave your house smelling fresh and pleasant all the time.

9. Pay attention to your closet

It is quite common for insects to take shelter in your wardrobe when it becomes wet and cold outside. And that can ruin your clothes, so pay a little attention to your closet. Adding naphthalene balls or neem leaves to your closet can get rid of unwanted guests. They are not too strong but will do the job without ruining your clothes.
