It usually starts small. A little peeling here, a tiny crack there, and before you know it, your nails are rough, flaky, and breaking way too easily. Mine have reached the point where my nails break the moment they get caught on clothing or other surfaces. No amount of nail polish can hide the uneven texture, which only annoys me more. I was close to losing all hope until my grandmother convinced me to try Ayurveda. After much digging, I found some Ayurvedic tips for strong and healthy nails and cuticles. But remember, folks, healing brittle nails takes time, so be patient with the process.

1. Practise snehana

If your nails are constantly dry, peeling, and breaking, Ayurveda points straight to an aggravated vata dosha. Vata is dry and rough by nature, and when it’s out of balance, it shows up exactly like this on your nails. But if you practise snehana, which means oil massage, your nails will get the moisture they are really begging for. Gently massaging warm oils like almond, coconut, castor or sesame oil into your nails and cuticles helps restore hydration, improve blood circulation, and strengthen them over time. Do it daily for five to six minutes, and you’ll notice your nails getting stronger and way more nourished.

2. Fix your diet to fix your nails

Dry, cracked, and flaky nails aren’t just about what you use on the surface; they’re also about what nutrients your body is missing. Weak nails often stem from poor rasa dhatu (nutrient absorption) or an imbalanced diet. Add healthy fats like ghee, nuts, and seeds to balance dryness, and include protein-rich foods like lentils, tofu, and quinoa to support keratin production. You can also try Ayurvedic herbs like amla, triphala, and brahmi to improve digestion and nutrient absorption. Also, keep yourself hydrated because dry nails are often just dehydrated nails. In Ayurveda, an increase in ama (toxin buildup) in your body also leads to weak nails. Ama clogs the channels that deliver nutrients to every tissue, resulting in weaker nail beds. One of the best tips to get rid of weak, brittle nails is Ayurvedic herbal soaks. Made with neem, turmeric, or triphala, herbal soaks can help cleanse and strengthen your nails from the outside. Soak your nails in warm herbal water for a few minutes three times a week. This will improve texture, reduce brittleness, and give your nails a healthier look without multiple salon manicures.

4. Balance your pitta

Yellowish or discoloured nails are often linked to excess pitta dosha, which causes heat and inflammation. So, consume cooling foods and herbs, including cucumber, leafy greens, mint, coriander, and fennel. You should avoid excessive consumption of spicy, salty, or processed foods to prevent discolouration or yellowing of your nails.

5. Don’t ignore nakha bheda

If your nails are constantly splitting, peeling in layers, or cracking at the edges, Ayurveda cautions against nakha bheda. This condition signals dryness, roughness, and lack of proper nourishment in the body. Along with regular snehana, include ghee and warm soups, and avoid excessive exposure to harsh chemicals.

6. Avoid nail trauma

Sounds weird, right? But you do traumatise your nails when you constantly use nail filers, buffing tools, and nail paints on your nails and cuticles. Such tools weaken the nail plate, making it even harder for nails to grow. Give your nails regular breaks from all the filing and painting, and switch to gentler, less frequent grooming. If you really want to keep your nails long and wear nail paint, make sure you’re using a nourishing base coat, avoiding harsh removers, and rehydrating your nails with oils in between. Use a softer, glass or wood-based nail filer and file in one direction to prevent damage. Keep your nail edges smooth and intact.

7. Protect your nails from excess water exposure

If your nails become soft, bendy, and suddenly start breaking, excessive water exposure could be the reason. Water repeatedly swells and weakens the nails. Wear gloves while doing dishes or cleaning, and always moisturise right after. Ayurveda emphasises maintaining balance. Excessive moisture without nourishment can be just as damaging to your nails as dryness. You should follow this Ayurvedic tip to keep your nails healthy every season.
