My whole life was a lie! I was today-years-old when I learnt that French fries didn’t originate in France. The snack that’s been carrying the entire fast food industry on its back actually traces its roots to Belgium. But fries aren’t the only food living a double life. Here are the surprising origin stories of some of your favourite foods that travelled continents before landing on your plate.

1. Spaghetti

Spaghetti is considered the poster child of Italian cuisine. Italy gave it the tangy sauces, the drama, and the cultural main character energy. But early versions of long, dried noodles originated in West Asia, eventually making their way to Europe through trade and cultural exchange. Arabs helped spread these pasta-making techniques across regions, including Sicily, where they began to evolve into what we now recognise as spaghetti. So while Italy gave spaghetti its iconic identity, the food’s surprising origin story is more global than you might expect.

2. Doughnuts

Soft, sugary, and dangerously addictive, doughnuts feel like peak American indulgence but their story starts elsewhere. They were brought to the US by Dutch settlers, who made ‘olykoeks’ or oil cakes that were fried and dense, nothing like the fluffy rings we know today. The iconic hole in the middle came later, solving the very real problem of undercooked centres in doughnuts.

3. Croissants

Croissants might be the ultimate breakfast delight in France. But its origins go back to Austria, where a crescent-shaped pastry called the ‘kipferl’ existed centuries before the croissant became a thing. The pastry made its way to Paris in the 19th century, where French bakers gave it a glow-up by adding that iconic buttery, flaky layering. Cut to today, the croissant comes in multiple flavours and dressings, and people love it both as a savoury dish and a dessert.

4. Chicken Tikka Masala

For Indians, especially North Indians, chicken tikka masala is not just another dish, it’s an emotion. Spicy chicken tikka masala with butter naan, onions, mint chutney, and a cold, fizzy Coke on the side. But how would you feel if I told you that chicken tikka masala is not Indian, it’s originally from the UK? The dish was first created by South Asian chefs in Glasgow, Scotland, who tweaked familiar flavours into a creamy, gravy-loaded dish to suit local palates.

5. Caesar Salad

With a name like that, you’d think Caesar salad goes back to ancient Rome or something Julius Caesar casually ate. But no, this one’s a total misdirect and one of those surprising food origins you didn’t see coming. Caesar salad was actually invented by an Italian restaurateur in Tijuana, Mexico, during a chaotic moment in the kitchen when he had to whip something up with limited ingredients. What started as a quick fix turned into a global menu staple. So the next time you order Caesar salad, just know you’re eating a Mexican-born, Italian-named classic that fooled all of us.

6. Samosa

Samosa is that one Indian snack you’ll spot at every chai break, train journey, and family function. So, calling it anything but Indian feels illegal, right? But the samosa actually started its journey in West and Central Asia as a meat-filled pastry known as sambusak. It travelled to India with traders, and somewhere along the way, got the ultimate desi remix with spiced potatoes and bold flavours. One of those surprising food origins where the transformation was so iconic, the samosa got a whole new identity.

7. Fortune Cookies

Every Indo-Chinese meal ends with snackable fortune cookies hiding quirky messages. So, it’s easy to assume that they are from China. But fortune cookies are actually an American creation, shaped by Japanese influences and popularised by immigrant communities in the US. In fact, you’ll barely find them in China itself.
