Ever since the trailer for the psychological thriller Accused was released, we set our Netflix reminders. Featuring powerhouses Konkona Sen Sharma and Pratibha Ranta in what looked like a gripping, intense, and thrilling watch, the film generated excitement across the internet. Accused is directed by Anubhuti Kashyap and produced by Karan Johar. The film features Konkona Sen Sharma as Dr Geetika Sen, a renowned gynaecologist, and Pratibha Ranta as Dr Meera, Geetika’s much younger wife. Dr Geetika is one of the best doctors at Chapelstone General Hospital in London, is soon going to get a promotion, and is adopting a child with her wife. All’s going well for her until an anonymous email accusing her of sexual harassment threatens to blow everything apart. Does the movie deliver even a sliver of the nerve-wracking tension, scandal, and scares that the trailer had promised? Read this Accused movie review to find out.
Accused or abused?

Based in London, Dr Geetika is a brilliant but blunt gynaecologist who can’t stand incompetence or moments of weakness in those around her. She is quick to dismiss interns and doctors, making her seem rude, arrogant, and even unlikable to most. But her skills and aspirations are admirable, and she is soon offered a promotion and the post of dean.
An anonymous email about sexual misconduct leads to a full-on enquiry into Geetika’s case. This also strains her marriage and makes Meera suspicious about Geetika. Meera hires a private investigator to find out the truth and discovers that her wife has been hanging out with her ex, making the marriage crumble into pieces. But what’s the truth? Is Geetika cheating on her wife? Is she guilty of the sexual harassment claims? Has she been meeting witnesses and influencing them to hide her secret? Or is there something more that threatens to expose her?
Great setup, dangerously flat screenplay
Accused sets up a premise that promises to be juicy, scandalous, and unnerving. But somehow, you never feel convinced. The movie has all the ingredients of a slow-burning thriller: power misuse, accusations, scandals, reputations at stake, marital strain, and infidelity. Yet, there is a lack of urgency, the edge-of-the-seat thrill, and the cold chemistry between the main leads makes it hard to sit through. You’d expect great performances from both Pratibha and Konkona, but somehow, the screenplay lets them down and doesn’t offer any depth to their characters. What could have been a mind-blowing psychological thriller feels like an underwhelming mix of relationship drama, forced dialogues, and the MeToo movement.

The movie doesn’t wait to dive right into the story, but the buildup never lands fully. Even in moments when both Geetika and Meera are running behind the prime suspect, the scene never feels tense. It tries to stay composed and sophisticated, and is majorly underwhelming. The climax also doesn’t come as a surprise and feels too obvious to make you feel any jitters. The supporting cast that could have added the much-needed spice feels flimsy and doesn’t do much to bring depth and emotion to the narrative. The cast includes Mashhoor Amrohi, Aditya Nanda, Sukant Goel, Monica Mahendru, and Kallirroi Tziafeta.
In all, the movie feels like a waste of potential and fails to leave a mark despite having strong performers and an interesting premise.
Accused is now streaming on Netflix.
Can you watch it with your family?: Accused features themes of sexual assault but doesn’t have any explicit scenes, making it a clean but disappointing watch.
