Have you ever spent hours getting the perfect wedding nails done, admiring every bit of that glossy finish? Then the mehendi function arrives, and you mistakenly stain some of the acrylic nails. And you sit there, annoyed and confused, wondering whether you should redo your manicure or make peace with the stained nail extensions. Well, you don’t have to do either, as we have some hacks to remove henna stains without ruining your gel nails. Here are some easy and effective ways to get rid of mehendi from your acrylic nails and nail extensions.

1. Oil soak

This technique is the holy grail if you want to get rid of mehendi stains from your acrylic nails without damaging them. Take some lukewarm coconut, almond or olive oil in a bowl. Soak your finger with the stained nail for 5-7 minutes. Once the oil softens the dried mehendi, gently massage the cuticles and nail edges. The stain will start to slip off your acrylic nails and other nail extensions while keeping them perfectly intact.

2. Makeup-removing balm

Your cleansing balm isn’t just for waterproof eyeliner; it can also help you remove stubborn mehendi stains from your gel nails. Scoop out a tiny bit of the cleansing balm, massage it onto the stain in slow circles, and wipe it clean with a tissue. It breaks down the stubborn colour without messing with the extension glue.

3. Non-acetone nail paint remover

Do you want the henna stain to vanish without melting your nail extensions? Pour some non-acetone nail polish remover onto a cotton ball, hold it over the stain, and gently wipe it in a circular motion until the tint fades. An acetone-free solution gently lifts the stain without ruining the shine of those beautiful acrylic nails you just got done.

4. Apply a whitening nail mask

We all know how magical DIY face masks can be for our skin’s dark spots and blemishes. But you’ll be surprised to see that they are equally effective in getting rid of mehendi stains from acrylic nails. Just mix half a teaspoon of honey with a pinch of turmeric and a little yoghurt. Apply it to the mehendi-stained nails and leave it for only five minutes. Wipe the mask with a damp cotton swab and see the orange tint vanish. Are you worried that turmeric will stain your nails even more? Don’t stress, as turmeric’s brightening properties help cancel out the henna stains. Also, a minimal amount is used for this and it sits for a short period of time, not enough for any stain to develop.

5. Sanitiser gel rub

Is the henna stain on your nail extensions fresh? Then you must remove it before it dries completely. Dampen a cotton swab with some sanitiser gel. Gently rub it over the henna blot until it disappears. Now, moisturise the cuticle and nail area. The alcohol content in the sanitiser helps lift the dye and is most effective if the stain is treated quickly.

Solutions you should never try for mehendi stains on nail extensions

  • Lemon and baking soda: This combo is too harsh for your nail extensions as it’s acidic and abrasive. It will scrub off the henna and your gel topcoat, leaving your nails dull and rough.
  • Acetone: Nail polish removers containing acetone will dissolve the acrylic and gel bonds that hold your nail extensions in place.
  • Vinegar soak: Vinegar might look harmless, but its strong acidic nature can weaken the adhesive between your natural nail and the extension. It can cause lifting or gaps around the edges, ruining your nail extensions.
  • Toothpaste scrub: The grainy texture of toothpaste can scratch and dull your nails’ surfaces.
  • Bleach-based hacks: Bleach is too strong for your nails and can yellow the acrylic, irritate the skin around it, and loosen your extension.
